Blue Horizon Bay Hiking trail with Peter Giddy -- Saturday 22.5.2021.

Blue Horizon Bay Hiking trail with Peter Giddy   --   Saturday 22.5.2021.

Saturday 22nd May 2021

Our hike for this Saturday is the Blue Horizon Bay trail.   Meet at the Parking Lot next to the Community Center -- Just off the beach;   We start walking at 9.00am.   Today the sky is clear and the temperature is 20 degrees maximum.

The hike begins with a steep uphill which is pretty exhausting for first time walkers.   We turn into the Shopping area and then into the Conservancy.   A few people remain at the Grassy area near to the tennis courts.   The rest continue into the forest which has is a steep climb and plenty of ducking under low branches.  For many of the group this is the first time to hike with us.   And a first time to walk through this delightful Conservancy.

We exit and regroup.   John has taken on the task of being group leader.   We continue our walk along the Pipe Line single track pathway to the V Stadens road.   Down to the V Stadens River mouth resort where we enjoy the break for a snack.    Aletheia and Carin have brought three large flasks of coffee and hot chocolate with shot glasses.   They share this out with everyone.   The hikers simply love this.   Well done to the Coffee Sisters.   They have also had T Shirts made specially for the hikes.  " Giddy up and Go".    Everyone makes use of the break to relax and recover; Plenty of picture taking; And of course the coffee and Hot chocolate makes the break extra special.

After the break we walk eastwards on the beach.   The tide is high and there is scum on the sand following strong winds during the week.  Huge waves wash up onto the beach as we walk.  Unfortunately this means that the sand is soft and makes for tough walking conditions. Some of the new walkers battle and are pretty much exhausted after the hike.    I can imagine that there would be sore calf muscles the following day.   This section is about 3km and ends with a nasty dune climb to the car park.  I estimate the hike to be about 8km and it takes us 3 hours.

After the hike some of us meet up at the windfarm for coffee and a snack.

Walking up through the Conservancy into the forest.

We are 35 hikers on the trail.   The beach sand is soft and makes for difficult walking conditions.
