Fernkloof at Groendal Uitenhage (Kariega). Saturday 31st July 2021

Fernkloof at Groendal Uitenhage (Kariega).   Saturday 31st July 2021

Fernkloof is at Groendal Nature Reserve near to Uitenhage / Kariega.   Approximately 60km from Greenacres in Port Elizabeth / Gqeberha.   To get there you have to drive on some rough dirt roads.   The entrance fee at present is R66 per person.

We have to sign the registers before entering the reserve and are issued a permit.

Toilets at the start of the trail and nothing at the picnic area nor on the trail.

There have been fairly recent rains which means that the stream which flows down the valley (Kloof) has water and this must be crossed multiple times.   After a short walk across some stones we cross the bridge and are into a muddy trail.   And then crossing the deepest section of the stream.   Just above the ankles means that everyone has wet feet at the start of the walk.   It does not bother anyone.

This trail is such that it is impossible to "Get Lost".   The trail is not well marked and you need to be aware of what constitutes the trail markers.   Beautiful Yellowwood trees and a stream lined with ferns makes this a good walk to do.   On either side of the trail are tall cliffs preventing anyone from wandering too far off the pathways.   At times it seems almost better to walk though the stream but ultimately the best option is the paths.

I keep the group together as we go upstream.   At the turn around point some of the youngsters have a swim in the pool.   We have our snack.   It has taken us nearly 2 hours to get to the turn around point.   We leave in small groups as people wish to go.   Even the scholars are safe to return on their own.  They know more or less the pathway.   You cannot move too far off the trail as you are following the stream the whole way.

The return walk takes us about one and a half hours.

Look out for the Groendal signs from Uitenhage R334

Kabeljous Hiking trail. Sunday 1st August 2021. Peter Giddy Guided Tours and hiking group

Kabeljous Hiking trail.    Sunday 1st August 2021 and hiking group.

The Kabeljous hiking trail that we do is 8km and just over 2 hours.  It is a really easy flat walk.   We walk through coastal fynbos; the crossroads and the viewsite pathways to the wetlands and beach walk past the Cairn.  We take the Dune walk to our half way snack break.   Across the Bushbuck Bridge and the Lagoon walk through the Aloe and Euphorbia forest.  We approach the river and do the short River Loop before getting back to the cars 2.15hours later.

A little chilly to begin with but really a good day for a walk.

Kabeljous Nature reserve.   We do the 8km trail to the viewpoint; Crossroads; beach; Dune walk and Lagoon Walk; Aloe and  Euphorbia Forest trail ending on the River Loop.
Unfortunately no dogs allowed on the Nature Reserve.
On the trail today:   Dayle; Julie; Chad and Kelly;  Dominque, Saverne and Eden;  Katharine, Sally and Neko;  Jenny;  Sonja and Adele with Lila and Lida;  Wendy and Chris.   A bit chilly to start off with.
On the beach walk with Julie, Kelly; Chad and Dayle
Dayle was at school with our Jacqui.  In the same grade.
Chris and Wendy.
The Cairn.   It is our tradition for everyone to put at least one stone on the Cairn.
Cancer Bush.
The parts of the plant most commonly used are the dried twigs and leaves. It is said to improve appetite and weight gain in cancer patients and is an immune booster in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. It is also said to be a gentle tranquiliser that decreases anxiety and irritability. The leaves of a variety of medicinal plants can stop the growth of breast, cervical, colon, leukemia, liver, ovarian, and uterine cancer, a new study shows.
One of the sections which is worthwhile is the Lagoon walk just after crossing the Bushbuck Bridge (Which has lost its sign)
The Kabeljous river and lagoon
