June 2020
Hiking the Van Stadens Flower Reserve.

Saturday 27th June 2020
John and Di Nelson; Chris Botha; Gilliam and Seelan;  Martin and Rouxle; Graham Richards; Janny; Albert; Teresa and Carl; Ferham and Vanessa; Gaye Stevenson and Linda.
The hike starts with a reasonably easy pathway.
Gaye takes a pic of this King Protea.
The Rocky pathway which leads to the picnic area.
Stopping for a snack and rest
Approaching the bridge we hear the noise of the trucks and cars passing.
Under the bridge is an adventure on its own.
The Forest walk.  We take the lower, more difficult route.
The Forest walk lower section is a little too tough if you are not fit
Looking across the bird hide at the end of the hiking trail.  Carl looks across the water.  He is not fit. Carl battled with his breathing and heart rate.  Chris and I stayed back with him as he struggled up the uneven and sometimes quite steep forest trails.  His mind was strong and he knew that if he continued at a slow measured pace with regular stops, he would make it to the top.  Both Chris and I were concerned at one time however Carl pressed on and despite battling, he made it to the top of the hill and on to the cars without requiring assistance.  Of all of us, Carl was the hero today.
The bird hide is a feature of this walking trail.
Janny and Teresa at the bird hide.
There is a slight cool breeze coming from the North.  The first half of the walk is the River Trail and at this stage Gaye and Linda are a little behind the group. We regroup at the picnic area and everyone is keen to press onto the second half -- The forest walk.  We decide to take the slightly more difficult lower section -- This route is a bit more technical and has some tougher climbs.  Carl battles on and manages to get to the end.  He has to stop a few times to settle his breathing and heart.
