Crossing the Bakens river pathway.

Wednesday 12th June 2019.
We meet at the Settlers Park parking area and from there we take the Contour Path and then down to the Bakens River.  We cross the river a number of times.  The crossing is made easy.
The river is not flowing strongly and we regroup after each crossing.  Once we complete the first section we cross Target Kloof under the road and then make our way towards Dodds farm.  This first part of the hiking trail is easy going and we do not rush the pace.
Dennis is our leader.  Other people who I know on the trail -- Paul; Val; Mike; David x 3; Lesley; Keiko; Flo; Margaret; David and Naomi;  Errol and Mo; Lucy; Keith; Marinda and Joan are first timers.  There are 25 of us altogether.

Beautiful flowers on the top of the Climb out of the valley.
Looking across to Target Kloof below... Val; Keiko and Paul.
Yellow Pansy Butterfly.  Looks like an Egyptian painting.
We stop for a breather and snack at the Dodds Farm terraces.  After a 15 minute break we return along the West side of the Valley.  This can be a little difficult as there are a few climbs.  Once we cross Target Kloof some of the walkers turn left to return along the same path as we started.
Others of us climb up to Walmer and the views across the valley.  Here we find the bush in flower despite the fact that this is now mid winter in Port Elizabeth.
I had started off the walk with a warm jacket. But after only 30 minutes of walking I had removed the jacket and walked the rest of the trail in a light T Shirt. The mornings are cold.  This morning I had started the day with a 1200m swim at Newton Park and struggled to warm my hands and feet after the swim.
We descend back to the main Settlers Park pathway and then up the Jan Smuts path back to the parking lot.  I have to leave immediately as I have a Tourism Meeting at 11am.

Are you planning a South African Holiday?.
Would you like to be part of this group?
We walk on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  The walks are usually about 2 to 3 hours.
I supply you with a sling bag, water and snacks (Fruit).  All you need is a hat and walking shoes.

Contact me to make a booking.
This is a great opportunity to meet South African Locals and time to explore and see a part of the area seldom seen by Tourists.
