Wednesday 22nd August
I meet Robin and we drive through to the Nature Reserve together. Here we meet our group for today and complete the formalities. It is a chilly morning and most people start the walk with a jacket.
After Registration Robin gathers the troops.
We are soon on the ridge and enjoying the early morning warm sun.
Jenny and Steve in conversation.
We find Pin Cushion Protea in bloom
This is a beautiful flower and is found in pinks and yellow.
We start our first descent. Here Flo and Dave taking pics bring up the rear.
The Erica make present in pink a blush of colour.
We have a brief photo session. We are 18 hikers this morning with Dave; Ralph; Paul; Jurgen; Ina and Magriet; Robin; Dave; Jenny S and Jenny L; Val and Russel; Steve; Flo; Julian; Ian; Chris and myself in red.
A lot more water than the last time we hiked this trail.
There is this storage kind of structure with the bones of some animal below.
We make this our snack break and a couple of us use it as a back rest while we relax for a few minutes.
Robin allows us a second break at the camp site.
After the camp site we walk along the stream which is flowing nicely after recent rains. But it slows progress down and so we take a bit longer than we had planned.
Steve gives Jenny L a helping hand.
Jenny S and Jenny L crossing the stream. Ian and I just walk through the water rather than try to keep our feet dry. Most people get a wet foot anyway.
Today we hiked about 12kay. Took us about 3.5 hours I think. It was perfect weather for the hike with intermittent sunshine and a cool breeze from time to time. I think this could be a really tough hike in Summer. We are often on the open plains where there is no shelter and in the valleys there tends to be sweltering humidity.
On the hike we saw Zebra; Hartebeest; Kudu as well as wonderful flower displays and birdlife.
