MONDAY morning 2 JULY 2012
Drive STERKSPRUIT. Start at ALIWAL North. Stay over at Lady Grey. Mountain View Hotel.

SUNSET AS I DRIVE FROM STERKSPRUIT TO LADY GREY. I STAY OVER AT THE MOUNTAIN VIEW HOTEL AT LADY GREY.

SUNRISE ON MY WAY TO WORK IN STERKSPRUIT. THIS VILLAGE IS AT THE FOOT OF THE MALOTI MOUNTAINS. SOUTHERN DRAKENSBERG.

Back home after a tough week away. Nicky and family have left for Natal where they stay at malanga rocks and then to Mooi River where they meet up with Lloyd and Judy. Then they stay at Balito bay for a while before driving back to PE.

I was supposed to go to Knysna for the MTB ride but for a number of reasons missed out on that. Raining this weekend. Ally has two hockey matches against a touring team from the UK which they draw one all. Then on Saturday afternoon they playa Pirates team and the Old Grey team win six to Nil.

Monday 9 th and Tuesday I am able to run both mornings. Training for Knysna half.

ALOES IN FULL BLOOM ON THE BRUINTJIES HOOGTE BETWEEN GRAAFF REINET AND SSE. THE WEATHER IS STUNNING. BUT BAD WEATHER AWAITS US THE WEEKEND AHEAD.

This week I travel to Middelburg and Graaff Reinet. The weather is stunning. But all forecasts for the past week has been that this will be a miserable weekend. Friday afternoon; Ben, Svenje and I leave for Knysna. We arrive in the dark, straight to Knysna for registration. It is a chilly wet evening. Rained most of the drive to Knysna. We do the registration thing, have a quick beer and go on to Plett where we stay over with Ena.

Friday night the wind picks up. By midnight the wind is a howling gale. We are up early and get ourselves ready for a cold and wet run. All the gear, healthy breakfast, plastic bags, water and food for the start. And then walk down to the car when we are lashed with the wind and rain so that it is stinging our faces. I propose (jokingly) that we head back for PE. Just then Svenje's husband phones to tell us that the race is cancelled. We check this with other runners. It is true. So, in our running gear, we head back home to PE. What a let down after all the build up.

We take a slow drive home in driving rain. Everything is saturated. And inland there have been heavy snow falls where I was earlier this week.

Barbara has more orphan animals at home. Sunday she goes to the townships to try to feed and rescue some pets. I stay at home keeping dry. Barbara really amazes me at times.

Monday it is still raining. But by Tuesday I am back on the road and running. Feels good. I do really love being on the road. Mike goes for a "body scan" and is all clear. Meanwhile a chap who ran with us at Dryland in Oudtshoorn ans also took part in the Baakens River valley runs, was diagnosed with Cancer and died earlier this week. Rico Clotz was a teacher and by all accounts a real father, husband and man amoungst men. I did not know him but went to the funeral on Thursday 19th afternoon. It was so emotional that I was quite exhausted afterwards.

Ally went back to school this week after four weeks of holiday. Back into sport, playing a girls hockey team from Beunos Aires, Argentina, Water Polo, training for hockey both old grey and school. She complains of sore muscles and tiredness. I cannot imagine why?

PEARSON PLAY ARGENTINA

ST GEORGES SCHOOL FROM BEUNOS AIRES

ALLY WAS MOST UPSET TO LOSE TO THIS TEAM FROM ARGENTINA. THIS IS HER SECOND TIME TO PLAY AN INTERNATIONAL TEAM.

ALLY PLAYS LEAGUE POLO AND SCORES A GOAL FROM THE BACK.

The week I start with Alpha at church again. What I do is lead a small group together with Salome Clack. We seem to make a good team. Debbie Glover never stops and leads Alpha again this year. Hugh has decided to take a break.

Our Monday evening cell group starts again after the school holidays. I have recently started doing Facebook and am now getting into it.

SATURDAY 21ST JULY
Ally plays three games of hockey in Grahamstown. One is for the Second Team and two for the U16's.

It is a good outing for us. Cameron Riddle is also with us as her dad, Alec is in America training for Ironman

ALLY IN ACTION ON THE DSG FIELDS IN GRAHAMSTOWN

Sunday 22nd June
First of two trail runs at Woodridge. John Nelson and I go out together. A tough two laps of 6km each. It is a chilly morning for a run but once we got going it was okay. Sunday afternoon we were supposed to meet at Nippers but the wind made going out a really unpleasant thought.

Monday
I attempt a run, my whole body is stiff and sore from the trail run of Sunday. So I cut very short, walking quite a bit inbetween.
Barbara is spending a week with Cathy in CT as she is on holiday. I do all the Ally fetching and carrying. Takes quite a bit of organization.
Tuesday I have a meeting in Port Alfred. I manage another attempt at a morning run with Erna and her friend.
Wednesday. Alpha This evening. Again I attempt a run in the morning (Andrew and Helouise) and again cut short with a fair amount of walking.
Thursday. No run this morning. I must take a break, rest, for the weekend two runs planned. I spend the day in HUMANSDORP, fetch Ally after her Hockey practice, Nippers meeting in Summerstrand. I must decide upon my future as a Nippers Committee member.

Friday 27th. It has been blowing and raining all Night. No running this morning. It is a Grey Bloemfontein Weekend. Hockey and Rugby.
The rain makes the fields a muddy quagmire. Interestingly we are able to watch three games with almost no use of umberellas.

ANDREW ENJOYS THE SATURDAY AFTERNOONS AT GREY

DIANNE BUSY ON HER PHONE. RUGBY AT GREY

JOHN LOVES THE SATURDAY AFTERNOONS WATCHING THE VARIOUS GAMES. THIS WEEKEND THEY HAVE SOME OF THE GREY BLOEM BOYS STAYING WITH THEM. AFTER PICKING THEM UP JOHN REALISES THAT HE WILL HAVE TO DO SOME MORE SHOPPING AS THE SUPPER WILL NOT BE SUFFICIENT. THE ONE BOY IS AN UNDER 14 FRONT RANKER WEIGHING AT 112KG'S NAMED "VLEIS". HIS SECOND HELPING IS MORE THAN MOST OF US CAN EAT IN A DAY.

TODAY WAS BROWN VS BROWN. THE BROWN BOYS FROM BLOEM WON THIS MATCH.

Saturday 28th
10km beach race. I had stopped running these events for a number of years. I was, for this period, not enjoying the fast flat runs. Preferring to run in our groups, often along te promenade but not in a race. Recently I have taken part in a lot more official events.

After the run, John and I rush back and I go to a Hockey match which Ally is playing for Pearson second team against the Newton Tech school.

ALLY PLAYS IN THE COLD AND RAIN.

Sunday 29 JULY
