SUMMERSTRAND NIPPERS CARNIVAL
25 JANUARY 2009.
I had been away quite a bit before this carnival. I had been at Wildcliff the previous week. And the week of the carnival I had spent three days in Johannesburg. This was quite hectic for me as I like to be able to work on teams and communicate the as much as possible to the Nippers in the week before a Carnival.
Saturday morning I had a wonderful 15kay run with Ben Carver and some other people we met that morning. After the run we swam out to the buoys at Hobie beach. I rushed off home for a shower and change and then back to the beach for the Level Test. Here we had 6 U10's going through their paces with a few U12's and one U14. Many of these youngsters battle with the sea swim and they like the comfort of having an adult with them as they swim. So I also had a few swims as well. A couple of us were stung by Bluebottles.
I had to go into the office to try to catch up with some of my admin work that I had missed out on being away as much as I had. I had planned to collect an army tent for the scorers but on Saturday morning we discovered that it was no longer available.
Saturday afternoon we met at Kings beach to set up the sprint and the flags arena's. Michael was there to lend a hand as were a number of parents (John, Clint, Donald, Warren, Dion, Deon). Sunday morning I was up early as I had agreed to meet Ben for a run again. I took our Scooter as Barbara would use my car and Jacqui used the bakkie. After the run I drove over to Kings beach and we started the set up of the Tent and taking the boards onto the beach.
Before we even start to talk about this carnival it is important that we acknowledge the hard work that organisers and officials put into the event. Everyone is a Volunteer. People who seldom receive recognition are the officials who no longer have a personal interest or a child in Nippers, but still spend a whole day on the beach. Thank you! Also Supporters, Parents and others who assisted in any way however small: your contribution is valuable and this is truly a case of Many Hands Make Light work!
Nippers started to arrive and we soon had a good team of Nippers for the day's activities. The weather looked perfect. It was a stunning PE “Day in Paradise” with a cool westerly flattening out the small swells. The U10's started off with Individual Malibu and I was surprised how well some of the newer Nippers did. We then moved over to the Flags where a set of heats were run. We had a small team of 4 girls and a substantial team of about 10 U10 boys. Each one of them took part in almost all the events. Malibu, Body Board, Long Run, Sprints, Team Sprints, Taplin & Surf swim,.
The day remained sunny throughout. The wind swung from West to South East but this did not affect the events too much except that the last few water events became difficult as sections would be directly into the wind and the Nippers were being pushed to the left as they went out to the buoys. For parents it was a day of drama as we watched our Nippers in some thrilling finishes. Also we witnessed some real bravery as Nippers who would not normally take part in water events went out despite their fears and misgivings.
Last Nipper in the water today was Caitlin Rogers who took part in the Iron Nipper contest. Caitlin has been an example of vasbyt for many years. She does not win races but steadfastly enters the event.
I know that I repeat myself but Nippers is a sport for the brave and those with heart. Flags is an incredible event for building character as those who are eliminated have to return to their team mates with a gracious manner. I watched the U12 girls flags finals and I was delighted to see how well they took defeat. Often with a smile and a spring in their step they would accept that they had been eliminated and as soon as they joined their team mates they would engage in conversation that did not excuse their failure to continue.
If you as a parent or supporter felt tired and frazzeled after this day on the beach, then how much more would the Nippers feel exhausted. And how much did they whinge? I heard very few complaints. And while we have a bit of time to sit and watch, the nippers use up the breaks to swim and surf.
Our team of U10's need to be propped up with some swimming ability. For the next carnival we should have Alexia Vaughn who took part in a few of the water events as a fun exercise as Lexie does not have a Level test yet and did very well in these events. We did not score well in the final tally were beaten by Kings beach and by Plett. The U12's and the U14's did very well today and they pulled us through to an overall win.
A couple of lessons: we should have a pack of black bags and hand to each of the clubs who are there as we tend to generate a huge amount of rubbish and it is not fair to leave this for someone else to clear for us. Also we did not have a table and chairs for the scorers. People like the scorers, starters and catchers have a non stop job moving from one event to another and don’t have time for a meal break. We should have someone to ensure that they are properly catered for.
I received these two notes which indicate that the admin and work that goes into an event like this is worth the effort:
“Thanks for organizing a great day and perfect weather. I am sure most of the kids batteries were pretty flat by this arvi and parents pretty frazzled. Summies has an awesome team spirit and i am wondering why it took me so long to finally get my SLA.
Have a great week and c ya Sunday”.
Thank you for a great day! AGAIN FOR ALL THE SUPPORT TO OUR CHILDREN ! Much appreciated!

SUMMERSTRAND NIPPERS 2009.
We will run a Nippers Group on Tuesday 16th at Summerstrand 09.00am to 11.00am.
Marking of clothing: Please mark all clothing and kit. Every weekend we find stuff lying around on the beach or in the change rooms.
I have a T shirt that I found on the beach with J Zeelie name and I have a chafe shorts which I found on the beach last weekend.
Sunday: This was quite an experience for those who were there on Sunday.
The beach took on a new shape and with the extreme low tide we had to contend with rocks in places which made surfing quite dangerous.
In the both the U12 and the U10 group we had a few first timers who slotted in quite nicely.
The U14’s went out for a few long paddles on the Malibu boards and Clint sent them to the Pollock Rocks and back.
We did quite a bit of beach work and ended up with U10’s challenging the U14’s at Flags. Real fun!!

You can be proud that your children take part in a tough sport like Nippers!
Nippers builds character; muscle and fitness; and a healthy respect for the ocean and its everyday whims.
Today we had a good turnout of Nippers and coaches to enjoy a session on the beach.
We started off with a warm up, run and exercise session.
Then the U14’s decided to head out on Malibu’s again. Today was different as there were some HUGE swells and crashing shore breakers. And a few really brave U12’s elected to join the U14’s. Ally, Ali, Caitlyn, Christie, Daniel, Hampton and a few others joined the U14’s for a long paddle from Pollock towards Hobie, around Bird Rock and back.
This was further than many of the youngsters had ever been. Don’t think that they were not fearful to start off with. But they managed to overcome this nervous anticipation and completed the exercise. Then the U14’s once more took to their Malibu Boards and paddled off to the Pipe to join the surfers there.
The U10’s and U12’s did some Body Board work and some of them were Severely Dumped by those crashing shore breakers. Yet we saw no tears and they were soon back in the water with boards surfing and enjoying the sea. We also did a long run and some flags exercises.
This a good workout for a young body between about 8 to 14 years and an even better workout for us mom’s and dad’s who try to keep up with the Nippers. Thanks to both coaches and parents who brought children to Nippers today and to those who selflessly assist on the beach, Tuck Shop, admin and in other ways.
Sunday 28th: the cage will be open for anyone wanting to use craft or the facilities. This will be an unsupervised session. 11.00am.

Thursday 8th January: we will have a meeting for the committee, coaches and other people wanting to assist in the organisation of the Summerstrand Carnival to be held on Sunday 25th Jan. The meeting will be at Peter’s house: 23 Mill Park Road: 18.30 Sharp.
Sunday 11th January will be the opening of the new year’s official Practice Sessions. 11.00am at Summerstrand.

NIPPERS NEWSLETTER. Sunday 3 February 2008.
Sunday morning: I left home early on the bike. The wind had been blowing for most of the night and it was a strong west wind that almost blew me off the bike as I rode down to Kings Beach. Varrin, Clint, Donald, Hannes, Roger and Warren met to set up the Tent and take the craft onto the beach.
Warren hitches the trailer to Clint’s vehicle and takes a running start but gets stuck in the deep sand. We are able to tow his vehicle with Paul’s 4X4 and finally have the trailer on the beach. Setting up the tent is going to be a real challenge in the wind. We had to hammer the pegs deep into the sand and pile loose sand onto the bottom sides of the tent to make it more secure. The wind gusts and men like Hannes are almost blown away as they grip tightly onto corners of the tent.
Once we had the tent set up we were able to get our team together. I was delighted to see a good turnout of nippers that morning. The wind must have put some of the nippers and parents off going to the beach but most of the teams were there to represent Summerstrand.
Our first priority was to get the new Nippers through their level test. They had done most of the work the previous afternoon but were unable to swim due to a strong East Wind. Some of them were a little nervous with the West wind blowing so strongly this morning, but we soon had them out there swimming as far as some of them had ever swum in their lives. It is always good to see these young people developing new skills and abilities. This was no exception and all of them passed their level test and were then able to compete in this Carnival.
The U12’s started off with a Malibu Individual race. We were concerned that the nippers may become blown away by the strong winds but they all coped exceptionally well and that set the tone for the rest of the morning. The events ran in quick succession. After the individual Malibu event, the U12’s took part in Sprints, Beach Relay, Long Run, Run-Swim-Run and Malibu Relay.
By the time they had completed their last event the organisers had decided to call it a day.
The sun and sand had taken their toll but we had all had a great morning on the beach. We must thank the organisers for setting up this Carnival for our benefit. Claire and her team had to work in the clubhouse and could not even watch their children participate. The Tuckshop ladies put on some fine faire but due to the wind and cutting the Carnival short they were left with supplies over. Plett in particular should be congratulated for their participation. They had to drive down from Plett in awful winds and then had to drive back again in equally bad weather.
A number of Nippers had taken part in Water Polo, Gala’s and Biathlon on the previous day. You could see that they had their race number from the previous day’s event still written onto their arms next to their Nippers numbers for the Carnival. These youngsters must have been exhausted as many of them would take part in every event in the Carnival.
The overall result was Summerstrand U10’ and U14’s won and the U12’s came second. Summerstrand had some outstanding Nippers recognised: Adam Stevenson, Jamie Lee Engelke and Matthew Wilson. Summerstrand were overall winners for the second Carnival in a row. Our next Carnival is due to be held in Plett from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon the 1st and 2nd of March. This is the East Cape Champs and we will need to have a full team of participants if we are to have any chance of being “East Cape Champs” for the next season.
We will be meeting for Practice on Sunday 10th Feb between 11.00am to 13.00. Marius has agreed to assist with vital function of coaching of the Micro Nippers. These are the youngsters who will be the core of our U10 team of 2008/2009. Marius will need all the help that he can get from other parents or siblings willing to assist. Your U10, U12 and U14 coaches will be on duty and we expect to see all of you there for the next four weeks leading up to the Plett Carnival.
Saturday 16th February: We will be having a Nippers evening in the club house. This evening will be focussed on the Nippers: They will each receive some kind of “Party Pack” as well as Certificates to reward our young members for their efforts over the past two Carnivals.
This evening we will also be able to enjoy meeting parents as Clint will be cooking up his famous Pootjie, we will run Hundred Club draw and will be able to watch the Super 14 matches as the Stormers play the Bulls at 17.00 and Cheetas play the Lions at 19.00. We will also be talking to Nippers and Parents about the upcoming Plett East Cape Champs and the National Champs. Donald has offered to set up a DVD presentation of “Nippers in Action”. Please put this important evening into your diary.
Sponsorship(s). It is critical for us to try to secure sponsors for our National event in April. Your club has some huge expenses in equipment, kit for the Nippers and Parents as well as during the event itself. Please let us know if you would like us to approach an organisation or if you are able to make an approach on our behalf. Deon Engelke and Dave Naude will be available to make presentations and give some facts and figures.

Summerstrand Surf Nippers
Chairperson’s Report
27th June 2008.
1 Performance during the Season
The club has had its best season in recent years, winning ALL the local carnivals, including East Cape Champs, a title we have not held for three years. To top off and excellent season, we came a very close second to Fish Hoek at Nipper Nationals, who only beat us by a slim 27 points!
Well done to all our nippers, as each one of you contributed to these great results. While the nipper team achieved the club wins, we must also salute great individual performances. A number of U12 and U14 nippers received recognition from East Cape, and would have received colours if there had been an East cape side. These nippers were:
U12 U14
Kyla Naude Kirstie Engelke
Meghan Derry Lauren Billson
Kurt Van Staden Adam Stevenson
Luke Stevenson Oliver Wiehahn
Giovanni Falco
Jordan Zeelie
Nippers winning Victor and Victrix Ludorum awards this season included:
Adam Stevenson
Oliver Wiehahn
Lauren Billson
Matthew Wilson
Jamie- Lee Engelke
Lara Odendaal
Special mention must be made of our U14’s win at nationals. This group of nippers has won their section at nationals three times:
U10 – 2004
U12- 2006
U14- 2008
They are truly our dream team!!
2. Equipment
The challenge for the club this season was that we did not have an official sponsor. We had made a decision that our nippers needed to compete on Hurricane Boards, so we needed to find individual sponsors. I managed to arrange some contributors through my Penny pinchers suppliers. I would like to thank the following:
Rob Dowding - Ceiling Master
James Thompson - Motorvia
Spectrum Agencies
Swartland
Col Timbers
3. Financial Results
Claire Meintjes efficiently handled the finances this season. We started the season with around R20 000, thanks to the Equisweet sponsorship of the last two years. This also enabled us to buy two additional club Hurricane Boards. We paid for all carnival expenses and all club function expenses, and we have ended the season with around R6 000 in the bank.
This means we cannot be as generous next season, as we will only have membership fees and clothing profits to rely on. We need to find a sponsor for 2008/09.
4. Club events
We had a number of enjoyable social activities this season. We had 3 100 Club draws, the Christmas Party and the Gees party. Many thanks to Clint Meintjes, who provided us with very tasty food on most of these occasions!
Many thanks to all the families who supported us on these occasions. We believe that people who socialise together, will work hard together!
5. Thanks
A club of this magnitude cannot function successfully, without a lot of effort on the part of certain members. I would like to give special thanks to the following people:
4.1 Our coaching staff:
Joe Zeelie, Deon Engelke and Alex Odendaal, who achieved wonderful results with a small group. They won all the local U10 carnivals and lost out to Fish Hoek at nationals by only 12 points!
Varrin Karp, Roger Fraser and Peter Giddy, who did great work with the U12’s
Clint Meintjes, Charles Du Toit and Don McGillivray, who had the pleasure of coaching our victorious Dream Team U14’s!
4.2 Our Committee
Thanks to all committee members. However, special mention must be made of Claire Meintjes for coordinating the many administrative activities required to run the club.
4.3 Other Helpers
Terry Hepburn for all the photography, and for all the excellent recruiting efforts
Hannelie Bakker for officiating at carnivals
Lee Kemp for assisting with level tests and carnival arrangements
All the moms and dads who helped at practice and at carnivals!
Charmaine Ubsdell for helping at clothing/tuckshop on a Sunday!
Finally, we need to focus on 2008/09 to ensure that we continue on a winning trend. To do this, we need new blood on the committee, as the current committee all leave at the end of next season and we need continuity! We also need to recruit new nippers. We urgently need U10’s! We also need more beach specialists, especially at U14 level!
I am sure that as a Summerstrand Surf Team we can maintain our dominant position.

Claire and Charmaine did an excellent job of sorting out the clothing. But even more good news: they took all the “old” clothing that we no longer use and gave this to a soccer club in Kwanobuhle (Uitenhage) and this club has 11 soccer teams kitted out and now wearing Summerstrand branded clothing. Great Move Claire!

SUMMERSTRAND HOSTS NIPPERS OPEN DAY
Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club at Pollock Beach begins its bid to win national honours when the Nipper season officially starts on Sunday.
The club will host an Open Day for all prospective Nippers and their families this Sunday from 11am-1pm as they prepare to improve their national ranking.
The club is one of the strongest in the country, having been placed a narrow second at the Nipper Nationals Champs earlier this year, but it is not all about winning.
Club Chairperson Warren Collier said Nippers, or lifesaving for children aged between 8 and 14, was about developing life-skills on the beach and in the water.
“One of the greatest things, especially for people who live at the coast, is the ability to enjoy and handle the sea conditions and this is what Nippers develops in a safe, fun environment,”
Collier said. “It is one the most empowering activities for young people.”
The club near Something Good at Pollock Beach will be open to all newcomers this Sunday with goodies for all participants.

Nippers must have completed a Level Test for their age category to be allowed to compete.
These Carnivals are fun events and Every Nipper will be able to compete in a variety of events.
We will pitch our Yellow Gazebo as the central meeting place on Central Beach.
Parents should make their own accommodation arrangements. There are a number of options: Camping, Bed and Breakfast’s, Castleton or the River Club are suggestions. Nippers gain a huge amount of experience and have a great time at the Plett Carnival.
We must have parents willing to take times and places at each age group. This information is required for our own awards as well as future team selections.
Everyone must assist with off loading and loading of the craft onto the trailer.
Please stay for the awards and results at the end even after your child has completed his/her last event. This will finish at about 15.00.

NIPPERS HOBIE BEACH CARNIVAL
Sunday 7 December 2008.
From the start we battled to extract any information regarding this carnival. We knew that it was on the Nippers Calendar, however that was about the sum total of the information that we received. In addition to this we had the added complication of an Aquabear Gala and Water Polo events on the same day. Finally, after some time and effort, Claire was able to obtain a program. The Carnival was to be held at Hobie beach at 09.00am and the first event was to be a Taplin relay and then a number of events would follow.
I was able to send out a notification with just days to spare and must apologise to those who did not hear about this Carnival and who waited for us at Summerstrand.
The Trailer was still packed from the Plett weekend and Warren parked the trailer in the Hobie Parking lot. We arrived at around 08.00am and began with setting up our tent. The tent is to me, a symbol for parents and for Nippers, that Summerstrand it there. And that we are prepared for the day’s activities. We then brought some of the boards down to the beach and within a few minutes, Nippers started to arrive and were out in the ocean having a great time.
East London were next to arrive and then Paul from Kings Beach arrived with a small team of his Nippers. East London had somehow received a notification of the Carnival and had a reasonably large team of Nippers. There was, as far as I could see, only one little girl (Whitney) from Hobie Beach. Time passed and 9.00am approached without any sign of arena’s being set up nor any of the organising club being present. Resourceful as ever; the Kings Beach and Summerstrand coaches banded together and decided that we would run our own Mini Carnival.
First out were the U10 Taplin teams with other age groups following suite. Warren had rushed back to Summies to fetch some flags and we set up a flags arena which our small team of U10’s were first to use. The U14’s headed off to a sprint arena that had been set up and now we had a bit of a flow going. Parents assisted in all kinds of ways including; scoring, marshalling, water safety and catching. Even Katharine and Lisa Marie assisted in the water as the U10.s did their body board event.
During the morning between about 9.00am to 12.00pm we managed to fit in: Taplin, Flags, Individual Beach sprints, individual Body board, individual Malibu board, beach sprint relays and finally an Iron Nipper event. The one thing about having less control is that normal rules don’t apply: We dispensed with numbers. We did not ask who had done their level tests, when we had to do the team beach sprints we did not have the right numbers for teams so organised mixed (between clubs) teams for the event. And to top it all when we asked which of the U10 Nippers felt up to doing an Iron Nipper event we had a contingent of about 10 brave young boys and girls who were willing to take a chance.
Brett from East London made himself into a human Buoy and the U10’s swam around him and then Body Boarded around him as well. The event ended up with the youngest of Nippers out on Malibu’s around the red buoy. This is a tough event for these young people and we can be proud of there courage. The u14’s and U12’s followed with an Iron Nipper event.
Despite the non existent organisation those who were able to make it down to the beach on Sunday had a wonderful morning. The sea was flat and almost waveless. Most of us were able to find reasonably good parking and for those of us who enjoy a swim with the Nippers it was a fine morning for a “Goof”. Thank you parents for the many ways in which you assist so willingly. Without your support on and off the beach we could not organise this fantastic life style for our children.
Finally thanks to the Nippers for your enthusiastic participation and the way you have bonded into a team. Summerstrand was well represented and while I don’t think that there are going to be official results, I would be surprised if we would not have won the day despite depleted teams.

NIPPERS
PLETTENBERGBAY CARNIVAL
Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th November 2008.
The Plett Carnival always seems to spring itself on us early in the season. However it is a great motivator to get us all going with training, Level Tests, sorting out teams and recruiting of new Nippers. This year the Plett carnival was postponed to the end of November so we had a bit of breathing space. We had recruited huge numbers of new Nippers and these young people and their parents all had to be introduced to what Nippers and carnivals are all about. The U10’s had started off with something like 6 Nippers at the first Sunday and this had grown to over 25 active Nippers at last count. The U12’s and U14’s had also a whole gang of new young boys and girls who seemed as keen as anything to become part of this great activity.
Our daughter, Ally had decided that she no longer needed us and travelled down to Plett with her long time friend, Amber. So Barbara & I drove down on Saturday morning on our own. It seemed like it was going to be a bit overcast and I had a few doubtful parents question whether the carnival would go ahead as planned. My stock answer to this question for both Sunday practices and Carnivals is: “Your coaches will be there!”
After we had off loaded our stuff at my mothers flat (she lives in Plett), we headed for the beach and were happy to see that Warren had found a good parking and had left the trailer for the first there to off load. There were a couple of other parents who also arrived early and we quickly got stuck into carting the boards to our normal spot that we like to book for Summerstrand. We had the tent up in a flash and Barbara had our chairs (so kindly donated to us by Terry Billson) set up. I had brought programs and teams so that as the Nippers arrived they could see what was going to be expected of them.
Ant Cox called a managers meeting at 11.00am and once some of the detail had been sorted out we were able to start the first events. In the U10 group we realised that we had just 7 participants and the first event was the Taplin Relay which required four Nippers per team. When we explained that the swim was WAAAAY out to the two buoys and back then the body board section would be the same there was a bit of a pause before we convinced our team that we would be fielding two teams with one member having to do two disciplines. The U12s and U14’s had no such trouble as they have some wonderfully capable swimmers and boarders. Fortunately the Plett surf did not let us down and it was reasonably flat and calm throughout the Carnival.
I promised our younger team members that I would be with them the whole time so ended up doing quite a bit of water work that afternoon. And, by the way, the sea temperature was not as warm as it will be in Durban later next year! But in the end we did our thing and, much to the coach’s delight and pride, both U10 teams finished the Taplin Relay. We then moved on to the Flags section where the U10’s were much more comfortable and we had a good number in the finals. Poor young Marion was the only girl in the U10 squad but she certainly held her own doing almost every possible event that there was.
That afternoon we managed to complete the Taplin relay, the Flags heats, the individual Body Board event, the individual Swim event, the individual Beach Sprints heats, the Malibu relay, the Beach Sprints Relay heats and the Body Board Relay. This is a huge number of events for any Nipper and by the end of the day (16.30) everyone was quite exhausted. The day had remained overcast and cool and so we had the weather on our side.
Someone had booked supper at the fish restaurant near to Castleton and we headed off there for supper. A group of parents had stayed at the beach restaurant to watch both 15’s and 7’s rugby and by the time the arrived at supper they had already had a fair share of enjoyment. It was a stunning evening and we sat outside together with a table full of U14s at one table and U12s at another. The rest of the U12’s were having themselves a ball at Castleton. The vibe amoungst both the adults and the youngsters was something to experience.
Sunday morning we were up early and at the beach shortly after 07.00am. Ant had said we should start the first event at 08.00. The first event of the day would be the long run starting with the U10 girls. Our lone representative, Marion, was nowhere to be seen. Andrew must have decided to sleep in a bit. The run of 800m started without her. Then when the girls were already half way in their run the Jonas’ family arrived. Marion was not to be left out and she started the run all on her own. The amazing thing to see was the way the Summies U14’s ran in with her at the end. I think that it was more than just Barbara who felt quite choked up with emotion seeing the support that Summies gives to their team. Marion’s effort scored points for the Summies U10 team.
Our U10 boys took off at a sprint but then the distance was a bit too much for them: we need to work on this for future. The U12 girls were next and we saw Ally sprint off in front. In fact it was quite funny to see the look on her face of: “What am I doing here in front?” Well she held her own to the turn and then was overtaken but a slight young girl. Despite efforts from rivals to run ahead of her, Ally managed to stay in second place to the end. It was about now that I realised that she is no longer my little girl but a real tough young lady who can hold her own at any event that Nippers can throw at her. The U12 boys and the both groups in the U14’s did very well and this set the scene for the rest of the day. There was a bit of a scare after the U12 boys finished in that Jonathan N collapsed and his parents took him home early to make sure that there was not more that needed attention. I believe that he is back on his feet again and will be back at Summerstrand as soon as he can.
We went through the Run Swim Run, Beach sprint relay finals, Malibu board individual, Beach sprint individual finals, Iron Nipper and finally the Flags finals. The U12 boys was quite a sight as we had 9 out of 10 boys in Summies kit. Flags is, to me, one of the toughest events; as this is an elimination event. And the Nippers know that at any time they may be eliminated in front of a group of parents and peers. But this is what builds character in our children and we can be as proud of them if they are eliminated in the very first round as if they make it through to the final two.
Today had been sunny and as we sat watching our young champions doing their thing at flags I would feel the sun on my legs. I knew that I would suffer the next day. But the joy of being on the beach and in the sea and the wonderful enjoyment that we get out of being with a group of Nippers would far outweigh any pain. The carnival ended at about 15.30 after we had loaded the boards and kit back into the trailer.

So well done Summerstrand. You were first overall and held up your title as East Cape Champs! The U10’s may have not ended up first in their group but they contributed to the overall result and we are very proud of them for what they achieved over these two days. Especially their participation in the sea events.
Parents: if this was your first Carnival: we hope that you have enjoyed it and will be back on the beach to support your Nipper as often as possible. Should you wish to be part of the adult group in any way there is a need for parent participation as much as there is for the nippers to take part. Please approach your coach or one of us to talk about how you can contribute to the ongoing success of Nippers at Summerstrand.
Our U10 group has a long way to go to be a force to be reckoned with. But we will get there. The U12 group is very strong but have one weakness in that we need two or three more strong swimmers and boarders. The U14’s look like they have already built a strong team in all departments. Recruiting must be something that we all do all the time: talk Nippers to parents and children alike. Particularly if you know that they have a strength either in water or on their feet.
Thanks to Plett for setting it up and to parents and Nippers alike for all your support and encouragement.

SUMMERSTRAND NIPPERS: NEWSLETTER
We are really back into the season.
Today we had a huge turnout from existing Nippers as well as a wonderful response to the work of Deon and others to promote Nippers for the new season.
Shareen, Andrew, Marius, Roger Lightening and I coached the U10’s and Micro Nippers. Shareen had 6 boys last week. This week we had 8 girls and about 14 boys. And they were really very keen once they got into the swing of the game. The morning started off with a stunning display from the whales and the dolphins as they helped to add something special to the morning at Summerstrand.
We started the U10’s and Micro Nippers off with a bit of running in the shallows and then did a bit of a warm up away from their parents.
Once they were starting to feel as if they belonged to a team we played a game of fetch the balls and put them into baskets. And in no time at all they were running in and out of the surf as if this was the most natural thing to do. We put them on body boards for a short while. This allowed the first timers to become accustomed to the boards.
We then had a bit of a relay event including running into the surf.
We finished the morning off with Flags and we can already identify a few of the youngsters who will be next year’s stars.
Claire and Charmaine had prepared some Hot Dogs and Ice Creams. Once we had the Nippers really good and tired we sent them off to enjoy a bit of a treat. Being in the back rooms of Nippers is really hard work. Thank you ladies for what you do here.
The Under 12’s were led by Deon, Alex, Hannes and I think had about 30 Nippers. The coaches were not at all soft with this group and soon had them out on Malibu boards and swimming around the buoys. Deon reports that there were at least 6 of the 10 newcomers who had never been that deep into the sea before. “It is really encouraging to be able to be part of the journey that these young people are taking into a life of beach surf proficiency.” Hannes commented: “We are going to have a few great sprint teams for the new season”.
The Under 14’s were coached by Brian, Carmell, Lauren and Varrin. Varrin coached the 6 newcomers while Brian handled the more experienced group of 12.
In total we had about 70 Nippers on the beach this Sunday.
It was great to see previous U14’s, who have now moved on to Juniors, assisting all round. They were seen to be active in the club house as well as on the beach. Thanks to them.
Thank you to the parents who were there today. You have made a wonderful decision to bring your children to the beach. Personally I can think of nothing better for a young person than to develop a healthy respect and yet an ability to overcome a fear of the surf. Two hours of beach fun is one of the best ways your child can spend a Sunday morning.
We hope to see you again next week. Please note that while the weather was great today, it is not always the case. But you will find coaches there every Sunday. 11.00am to 13.00pm.
We should have a program for the upcoming carnivals soon and will pass this information to you as soon as possible.
Level Tests: Before a Nipper is allowed to take part in a competition (competitions in Nippers are known as Carnivals) the youngster has to undergo a level test. This test comprises answering a few simple questions which we will coach the Nippers on in advance. They then complete a run swim run. We do this on Hobie beach and it is well supervised by coaches and safety officers. Parents have to supply us with a copy of the Nippers’ Birth Certificate as well as a signed indemnity form. New parents please hand these into Claire as soon as possible so that we can book a level test.

The final results?

SUMMERSTRAND
12TH OCTOBER 2008.

CLARENDON SLEEP OVER; NIPPERS AGM; ACCHILES RUN; RIVER MILE; MARCH 2008.
Weekend: Friday 15th to Sunday 17th March 2008.
During the week I visited Cape Town on Business and was able to see Nicci and family. Christian had his tonsils removed and was not feeling his best. He had a bad time of it for over a week after the operation.
The following weekend 16th and 17th January Ally had a sleep over at her school. We pitched tents on the Clarendon Field and ordered Pizza’s for supper. Craig and Shane Giddy with Lara were our next door neighbours and the Kotze’s, Colin, Lolo and Jarred made up the group. Both Barbara and Cheryl had decided to go home for the night. The children had a wonderful evening paying in each other’s tents in a totally safe environment.
The grown ups sat in little lagers enjoying the mellow evening with no worries about where the children were. Sharks played the Western Force and won the game to add to our fun of the evening. Barbara introduced me to a friend of hers (Edna) who does Power Plate. Edna is friends of Don and Cathy and fitted into the little group very well. As did her friend Lorinda. I think that they both enjoyed the sherry I had brought for Barbara. Desire (and Kenny) also joined the group. Ally and I went to bed at about 10 or 11.
It was some time after I had fallen asleep that I felt something in the tent. A young boy was looking for his mother and had come into our tent by mistake. Later I wondered if he ever found his mom. At the time I had been too deep in my sleep to think about what was going on.
Ally & I left early as I had to see a customer that morning. Later we went to Red House to register for the River Mile. By being early we qualified for vouchers for free Crocs. This is a plastic shoe that has become quite popular. That afternoon Ally had a party. I took a lift with Donald to the Nippers evening at Summerstrand. Aunty Mary and Gail came to visit Barbara.
We had a wonderful evening at Summerstrand, starting with a swim. Donald, Alex and I caught some amazing body surfs. Back in the club house we were able to acknowledge the Nippers who had participated in Carnivals. Summerstrand had won the last two carnivals. We then had a Lucky Draw for the Nippers. A host of prizes were handed out. In addition each Nipper and sibling received a small gift of chips and cold drinks.
Donald showed a DVD of pictures taken by Terry at the two Carnivals. Varrin explained the rules of a Carnival such as Plett where Nippers are “missing” at the time of their event. Warren spoke about the need for succession in the committee as some of the existing committee members would leave Nippers after the next season. He also appealed for sponsorships or for parents to search for financial assistance for Nippers Nationals in March this year. Warren thanked the people who work hard to make Nippers and evenings such as these, a reality.
The adults then had a Lucky Draw 100Club. Lots of prizes were handed out. I would go as far as to say hardly anyone left empty handed. After this we were treated to a supper that Clint had prepared; chicken Pootjie and rice. Clint has a very tasty but healthy recipe with plenty of vegetables. As you may know, Clint puts together a huge quantity of supper and despite this, the pot was empty at the end of the evening. Certainly no one went home hungry!
If you missed this evening I hope it was for a good reason as it turned out that there was this amazing vibe for parents and Nippers alike. Donald brought the Ice Princess as well as a Penguin musical movie. This was a surprisingly popular attraction. Many of the adults watched the Super 14 matches where, to the great delight of Bulls Supporters such as the Clint family, the Bulls beat the Stormers. Predictably the Cheetas beat the Lions. This had been an excellent evening with great support from parents and Nippers alike.
Sunday morning I was up at 04.30 and drove down to the Fig Tree where I met up with Achilles for a run. It was drizzling slightly but warm and perfect weather for a run. I started off in the slow group with Liz, Mary-Grace, Tom and Leslie. Gail and Pat surged ahead. Liz was quite beside herself as she had not anticipated being able to go to Two Oceans this year and Jock had phoned her to say that it would now be a possibility. All Liz now has to do is to enter the event. It will be her tenth Two Oceans and she is very excited at the thought.
During the run we had some really interesting and solid discussions. The route is up 17th Avenue and right into Buffelsfontein. Up to the top at Boundary road and down on the new Seaview road. Roy Cartmel was providing welcomed seconding. As we headed down Seaview; Bob, Theresa, Earl and Cathy caught us. From there Bob and I chatted for most of the way home as we went up the Chelsea Tea gardens road past “Much in sight” and over to Longbarn and back down Buffelsfontein and Constance roads.
Bob tells me that he is getting married in April. The faster runners such as Bruce, Mike, Baron, Andrew and Bradley had passed us along the road. It had been a most pleasant 24kay training run with some of the runners doing a bit extra as they ran home. I drove straight to church where I showered and then met Ally to attend the service.
After church we drove down to Redhouse. At registration I met up with Rob Ermes who was delighted as he had been chosen to represent EP at Triathlon. He had a stunning Olympic standard Tri in East London.
At registration we had body marking done and were handed caps to wear. The ladies were first off. Ally, her friend Kaylee and I walked to the start. It was these two youngsters first time to swim the River Mile and they were a little nervous. This could be heard in their conversation as they walked downstream. I left them to go the final bit to the start on their own.
Cheryl & John were there with Greg and once the race got under way John took a few pictures of Ally. She and Kaylee swam the whole way together and did an excellent time of about 24 minutes. Other ladies we saw included Carmen, Ashleigh, Tara and various other Nippers. Arlene (from church) is now a regular swimmer in the ocean swims on Sundays. Jenny you may be interested to know that your friend (Zelda?) from Croft McGill, also took part.
Michael had brought his family to watch Ally. He reminded us of his younger years when our whole family had taken part in this event. Clint was there with a tent and braai. He was cooking boerewors rolls for about 80 people as there were about 35 Nippers and family taking part in the mile. He was delighted to see that the whole lot had been consumed.
After Ally had swum her event she gave me her goggles and I walked to the start. I arrived and walked straight into the water and the race started. It was perfect timing. The run in the morning had taken its toll and I cramped up in my calves and feet a number of times and had to lie on my back to stretch the muscles. I was quite surprised to see how many people were walking on the shallow banks. John had said that some people were being disqualified.
I was able to finish in just over 30 minutes. Others who I had seen enjoying the outing were: Bradley Joubert, Kaylee’s Dad, Markus and MC, Warren and Jason, Imraan Moosagie, Roger and Christian, Kurt, Luke and Adam, Giovanni, Matthew and Luke, Donald, Matthew and Jonathan, Greg Kotze and a number of other Nippers.
Donald was cutting it fine as he had to get to the airport for a 17.00 flight to Cape Town. We all sat around enjoying the afternoon. It had been overcast and windless. Conditions were perfect for the river. At about 4 the prize giving started and, after a number of lucky draws, Matthew McGillivray was given a motor scooter as a prize. This was a highlight for the Summerstrand crowd.
Last year 720 swimmers had taken part in this event. This year I saw numbers on participants well into the 800’s. This event has been an annual swim for the PE public since 1924 and is the oldest event of its kind in South Africa. As the afternoon drew to a close, John & I reflected on the incredible vibe in the area as people mixed and had fun together with active participation in sport as the catalyst.

MARATHON BIATHLON NIPPERS AND BIATHLE 19 JANUARY 2008.
Marathon, Biathlon, Nippers and Biathle. 19 January 2008.
Friday evening I met up with Peter Pohlmann at Homely Farms where our Marathon race was due to start the following morning. Peter had already set up most of the start and finish but I was able to be of some assistance.
On Saturday morning I was first to the venue just after 03.00am. I sat and enjoyed the solitude of the morning with a hot chocolate and rusk. Others started arriving and it was my duty to direct traffic and assist with parking. This went off particularly well and soon the marathon runners had left and the 10 and 5 kay events started with out any complications. I had to leave the event immediately as we had a Biathlon on that morning in Gelvandale.
Ally had an excellent run and was catching her age group rival as they were completing their 8oom. I had a poor run of about 4.15 for the 1000m. We then went off to swim and Ally won her age group while I had a second slow event for the day doing 1.54 for 100m swim. We were both chosen for the EP team to go to Oudtshoorn in February but to our delight, Ally was top competitor for the U11’s and was chosen as “captain” of the A team.
The next day was Sunday and we had a Nippers Carnival at Kings beach. We were there early to help set up our tent. Ally took part in the swim, the body board and the Malibu board events. They then ran the beach sprints where Ally moved from heat to heat until she was eliminated. She did reasonably well in all of these activities.
Donald & Matthew McGillivray and our family then rushed off to Theodore Hertzel School where we all took part in the Biathle. (Run-swim-run). Matthew and Ally did well enough but it would be Donald’s first such event and he took off like a bullet and did exceptionally well.
We then drove back to the beach where both of the youngsters had to take part in the Iron Nippers event which combines four disciplines into one event. It would be the first time that Ally would attempt this gruelling event. Swim, Body board, Malibu board and running in between. She completed the event and while it was tough she did not seem at all phased by the enormity of what she had just accomplished. It had been a really tough sporting weekend for her.

GIDDY FAMILY NOVEMBER 2006
November 2006.
Nippers
Nippers is now in full swing. Donald & I have been visiting the schools to try to promote Summerstrand. This month we visited St Georges, Clarendon, Herbert Hurd, Summerwood, Collegiate and Grey. Donald has put together a collage of photo’s from the various Nippers Carnivals. He adds music to make a DVD that captures the attention of the children. I have been adding a little bit of excitement for the children by showing them an Electric Iron box and asking them if they know what is inside. I compare this to the TV show “Fear Factor”. You never know what may be in store for you unless you are prepared to try it out. In the box I pull out some biscuits as well as some onions and old lemons. This seems to entertain the children and hopefully we will have some new recruits this month.
We hear that Paul Lynch from Sardinia Bay has been targeting the Swimming clubs like Big Blue and Aquabears. Personally I think that the rivalry that exists between Paul and our own Nippers is very healthy. Not so much as to which Club wins carnivals but more that it pushes us into trying to recruit new youngsters as well as improving the level of competition and achievement.
Summerstrand had their first 100 club of the season this month. I signed up for the year but did not win any prizes. As Barbara was away in East London, it was just Ally & myself. Ally has a group of friends who she met there. Caitlyn and Amber plus a whole group of the Nipper boys. It was good to see the Nippers Parents and coaches and to hear their enthusiastic feelings about the Carnival last week.
Energade Triathlon November 2006.
The first weekend of November was the Energade Triathlon. I was down at Hobie beach early, as I thought that the race started at 08.00 whereas it started at 09.00. As I drove to the start the heavens opened up and rain came pouring down. But by the time I got to Hobie it was a perfect morning again. The Sea looked flat and while there was a West wind blowing, it was not too bad. I did the registration thing and then met up with Ron. Once I had checked the bike into the transition area, he & I went for a Coffee at the Wimpy. Finally the time came for the race to start.
I met up with Mike Webb and Ian Thomson from Achilles. It was Mike’s first Tri. Ian is a good swimmer and was looking forward to the swim. I saw Rob Ermes there. He does well on the bike. Paddy Hogson from Nippers was there. It was also his first Tri. I greeted Rod, the ex professional American triathlete now turned pastor. He has moved back to PE after a stint in Cape Town. Tim, Herman, Tracey and Paula were doing the relay as were a number of the Ironmen competitors. Other Achilleans I saw were Comine & Martin Geirz, Adelle & Mark Hunter Smith, Garreth Jacobson, Chris Gedye, Greg Scott, Robin Fourie, Davera Magson and Pat Thomson who was not taking part due to a cold.
I was apprehensive but walked down to the beach. The Ladies went off first and then it was the Men. I was soon far behind the pack of swimmers but pressed on. I saw one swimmer (Trevor Hawkins) turn back and another few had to hold onto the safety craft. I was not stressed as I had swum steadily and was soon heading back to shore. With the swells behind us, the return was quite quick. The Relay swimmers came charging past us back markers like torpedo dolphins. I was not phased by this display of strength.
As I ran up the beach, it was good to hear Neil, Rene, Gaynor and other people I know cheering me on. Ian Ross was there. He normally runs these events but had just returned from the Augrabies Endurance event and was feeling flat. I think that I am the only participant who needs a stool to sit on to change my shoes. I am hopeless at bending down or sitting on the grass. So I put out a stool and sit down to change. I was soon on the bike and heading towards Noordhoek. I had started off with Herman but he dropped me like a hot coal.
I was quite surprised to see that I was able to overtake quite a number of the younger cyclists. The wind was in our faces from the University corner. As I rode past the Back Entrance to the University I saw that the names that I had painted on the road for this year’s Ironman were still visible. The returning riders seemed to fly back with the wind. I was able to lock onto small groups of two or three on the way out and this of course assisted me as I could use them to break the wind. I chatted to Justin who works with Robyn Steyn (MPRG) at E & Y Auditors. He had good things to say about her before he rode away from me. On the way back I rode with one of Michael’s school friends, Greg Wallace. Greg was the Hooker for the Grey first team when Michael was in Matric.
One of the real features of this event was the Road Closure. Last year had been a Nightmare as the Ski Boat trailers came past when the cyclists were riding in both directions. I saw Stanford Slabbert in the showers at Summerstrand later that day. He is the councilor for the Summerstrand area and I think had a part to play in securing the road closure. He reminded me of the time that Markus Burri had rescued him from a near tragedy when he had got into trouble on his paddle ski and was being washed out to sea.
Once back in transition I slipped my running shoes on and headed out on the run. It is a five kay run to the Summerstrand Inn and back. I find the first kay or two the toughest as my legs feel heavy after the cycle. Once I had a bit of a rhythm I was able to run at a good even stride and passed a number of runners. I enjoyed running on the new cycle track that is being built along the Promenade. This is an initiative of Donald McGillivray and my opinion is that this will transform PE into a sought after destination for active people.
Finally back at transition we received a cold drink and I packed up my stuff. I must remember to read the rules for next year’s event. There were all kinds of funny rules such as the colour of the swim cap; do you have to wear a shirt while swimming? Etc. Results were Raynard Tissink 7th; Ryan Peter 14th; Garreth 48 (2004=1:02; 2005=1:12 & 2006=1:04). Allan Campbell 77th, Mike Kingston 82 (2005=1:21 & 2006=1:08), Christoff Opperman 105, Davera 110 (2004=1:21; 2005=1:18 & 2006=1:11), Corne Du Toit 134, Jonti Daniel 149 (2005=1:17 & 2006=1:14), Heidi Jansen 186, Butch Oxenam 229, Adele HS 246, Ian Thomson 262, Martin Gierz 275, George Scott 277 (2004=1:29; 2005=1:35 & 2006=1:29), Rob Ermes 275, Peter Giddy 293 (2004=1:24; 2005=1:34 & 2006=1:32), Paddy Hodgson 303, Comine Gierz 308, Mike Webb 310 and Keith Harris 315 out of a possible 339.
In the over 55 category I was beaten by John Jones (64) and Colin McAll (56). In the team event: Robin Fourie and Llewelyn Clack came 11th, Paula Wilson and Roger Oakley were 15th, Tracey Brink’s team were 17th. Greg Scott was 19th, Herman’s team was 27th, Mark HS and John Offerman were 28th, Alan Taylor was 30th, Viv Bullock came 35th, Tim’s team was 46th and young Greg Wallace was placed 83rd out of a possible 122 teams.
The total of all participants for 2006 was 705 while last year there were 695 in total. I felt that PE had done themselves proud that Sunday morning. The spectator support was excellent, The organisation of the event was pretty much flawless and the spirit of the participants was great. In the individual event 2004=313; 2005=377 and 2006=339. In the team event 2004=84; 2005=109 and 2006=122. I think that one of the main reasons for the drop in numbers for the individual event was the decision of many of the registered triathletes and Ironmen to take part as teams.
Barbara & Gail were in East London this weekend. I had dropped Ally off with Lene who brought her down to Nippers as I was now too late fetch her as I had originally planned. Our Nippers session was small as I think that many would have been put off by the wind and earlier rain. Hannes & I enjoyed having the small group of nine children. We did some beach sprints, relays, swimming, boarding and finally flags. Despite the West wind flattening out the sea, there were some big swells and some real dumpers that scared the children.
Crossroads
On my way back from a business trip to East London I stopped off at the Crossroads Nursery near to Grahamstown again. I met Shane who is a recovering addict. He tells me that he and Ivo were friends. One time they were going to break into a house and Ivo somehow opted out. It was the final straw for Shane who was caught and send to prison for something like five years. He talks of car theft and other crimes he committed to sustain his drinking and drugging.
Ivo is now involved in trying to promote addiction recovery with John Preler in Port Elizabeth. Shane is serving his probation at this Crossroads Nursery. He tells me that he has still two years to go after which he plans to open a nursery of his own. I had asked Shane to put some Aloes aside for me. These are wonderful indigenous plants that grow very easily and require no tendering. In winter they produce red and yellow flowers. They grow wild in the fields of the East Cape farms. He had a few in some soft soil in the nursery and I chose two quite well established Aloes. I think that the one is an Aloe Vera and the other is a Krans Aloe with more spiky leaves.
Once I got them home I dug two fairly shallow holes on either side of our front gate and planted them there. I hope that they will produce some colour next winter. In any event I now feel that I am starting to become a gardener with the Yellow Wood and the Aloes. Keith had shown me some of the Acacias that he had planted in front of his garden in Johannesburg.
I am also going to try to establish a bit of indigenous gardening in our house. One of the things that Dawn had given Barbara was a Cycad. They had this beautiful old plant in a large clay pot. I am sure that this plant must be about 50 years old. Dawn also gave Barbara a lemon tree that had been in a pot. I am sure that if we plant this tree in the garden with the same kind of attention that I gave the Yellowwood, then we should be able to grow a substantial tree.
On the first Friday of November Barbara went to East London to visit Dawn & Richard. She took Gail and hired a trailer as she planned to bring some stuff to PE. Dawn and Richard plan to emigrate to Canada where their two daughters, Raylene and Tracey live with their families. Raylene and Steven moved to Calgary over ten years ago. Tracey and Mark with their two children, Asher and Kayle, moved to Calgary in 2005. Richard sold his Burglar Alarm Business to his long time partner, Neville.
Dawn teaches at Rhodes (Fort Hare) University in East London. She took a Sabbatical and they both went to Calgary earlier this year. Now they have determined to apply for permanent residence in Canada. Dawn is able to work at a University there and Richard seems like will be taking life a little easier for a while.
This week Ally had her Clarendon Grandparents day. It seems that this has been such a huge success in the past that the school decided to have a separate Parents day as too many parents were attending the Grandparents day. Barbara was busy at the School and I went alone. As I arrived I met up with John Kotze. His son Gregory attends the school as well. Both of us were amazed at the quality of the show that was presented to us.
The Grandparents day is put on by the “foundation stage” Grades one, two and three. There were about 300 children singing some of the old classics such as Itsy Bitsy Bikini. Then each grade had their own little show to put on for us. I felt quite emotional and proud as I saw Ally doing her thing on stage. Grade three put on this show of the hunters and tourists. Hunters not afraid of anything unless it was a snake, croc or elephant. Each time a hunter would be eaten or the tourists would “drive past”. The show was full of song and fun. This will be Ally’s last Grandparents day. Amber’s “Oumie” has been acting as a surrogate grandparent as Ena lives in Plett and could not be there over the past few years.
Ally had a visit to the Orthodontist and it seems will have to wear a plate to correct her one tooth which is out of position. This is the same orthodontist that Cathy visited when Dr. Moug left PE. Pieter Roux bought the practice from Moug.
Inter Regional Gala in East London.
Ally was chosen to represent EP in a swimming gala against Border (now called Aloes) in East London. Megan Derry came up with us. We left at 05.30 and got into EL three hours later. The gala was being held at the Joan Harrison pool. The children had to register that they were there and were handed a red golf shirt each. We found out that there was no program and it seems that the general administration of the day was to be less than we have come to expect from the galas that Ally has taken part in. Noel Pearson and Poppie from Biathlon had clip boards and looked like they knew what they were doing.
We sat with John and Cheryl Kotze. John’s sister, Tessa was there to support young Greg. It seems that they are farmers from the area. John tells me that his parents died when he was very young and he was brought up in foster homes. They lived on farms in Zimbabwe at the time. A number of the Nippers and parents were also there: Hannes Zeelie & Boys, Peter & Matthew Wilson, Anthony Cox, Chris Lange & Family, The Liss Family (Jessica is U11 and went on to break the SA record for individual medley) I hear that her mother was a springbok swimmer, Christy Vaughn whose dad Craig, was a Springbok diver. Christy herself is a real asset to her swimming team as well as to Nippers.
We spent the morning watching relays and a then it was Butterfly, Breaststroke, backstroke and individual medley. This was a lesson in Under Promise and Over Deliver. The organisers promised us that the event would finish at 14.00. We soon realised that this was no going to happen. I had a few sleeps on the bench, we had too much to eat. I had brought my costume and was able to have a swim during the morning. Ally met a new friend also Ally (Alexandra from Collegiate). Dawn came to the pool to add some family support. Dawn had been invigilating some exams that morning and had caught two students cheating with “crib notes”.
The lunch break ended at 14.15 and Ally immediately had her first swim of the day. It was Breaststroke and she came third in her heat. Megan also did okay in her heat. Once all the Breaststroke swimmers in all the various categories had had a swim then it was time for the freestyle and again Ally was first in line. She had a terrible start and was not able to recover enough to catch the third placed swimmer. As soon as she had completed her swim we left for home. It was now about 15.30. If the organisers had announced that they expected the gala to end at 17.00 then everyone would have understood the delays.
The PE people had a three hour drive ahead of them; The Springboks were playing rugby in Lansdowne Road in Ireland where they lost 30:15. They had poor defense, missing many first time tackling and played a “ponderous” game. The Irish played exciting, fast, thinking rugby and took advantage of every opportunity. Ally & Megan were invited to the Finestone bash and we dropped them there before heading home at last. The Derry’s offered to fetch at 22.00 and we were able to flop down on couches.
Joan Harrison swimming pool
I cannot resist putting this little bit of trivia into the story:
Born in 1935 of a swimming mother and a rugby-playing father in East London, South Africa, Joan Harrison wasted little time taking advantage of her sporting heritage. At 13, she already held three Jr. and two Sr. national records, and that year won the 220 and 500 yd. Senior Freestyle National Championships.
In 1950, at age 14, she won the 440 yd. freestyle at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, beating the old record by 13 seconds and finishing 7 seconds ahead of the field. It was her first international competition and she was declared the outstanding woman swimmer in the Games.
Her second International Games was the Helsinki Olympics in 1952, where she won South Africa's first and only Olympic gold medal for swimming. In 1954, at the Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, she won two gold medals, a silver, and a bronze before retiring at the ripe old age of 17. She won the Helms Foundation Award for the best African athletic performance in any sport in 1952, and while concentrating on field hockey after 1954, she did manage to come back two more years to win the Nationals in her favorite 100 meter backstroke and in the 300 I. M. in 1956. She was South Africa's supreme swimmer in freestyle, backstroke and I.M. for six years. Joan married Charlie Breetzke in 1955. Charlie was also a Border swimmer and an Old Selbournian Rugby player. Joan represented Border in Hockey as well.
On Sunday morning it was back to Nippers after church. The weather did not look that good and I am sure that this must have scared some of the youngsters off. Those that came had a good morning. We played some games, did some exercises and even swam for a while. Then Donald set up the DVD in the hall and Chris gave us a bit of a talk on the upcoming Plett carnival and what we should expect. Ally went home with Lara and we went to Builders Warehouse to buy some bricks but were told that they do not stock the type that we are looking for.
During the week we managed to order the sand, bricks, cement etc for Builder Thomas. HE started on Friday and had soon dug the foundation trench, mixed the concrete and was ready to start laying the first bricks. Dawn & Richard visited us on their way to CT and we had a gathering of the Otter trail group with a Braai and watching the video that Rob had taken. On Saturday that week, SA lost to England at Twickenham 23-21. It was sad as we had been in front until the last few minutes of the game. That evening it was the Achilles dinner at the Old Cash store. We sat with Bob Stedman & Jean, Graham & Gail Channon, John & Cheryl Kotze and Gerald & Lynne Hoxley. On Sunday morning I met Ron for a cycle to Sacremento & back. Good to be back on the bike. Later on it was the last practice before the Plett carnival. The sea was quite rough with the southeaster blowing but we had a good morning. Ally had a Hip Hop practice immediately after Nippers. I was quite pleased to see that a few youngsters from the schools that we had visited were at Nippers practice. So all the effort was not lost.
We have started to build the back room for Barbara’s School. We have Thomas the builder, his brother Sam and assistant Funwell. They have made good progress, Built the walls, fitted the doors and window, tiled the floor and must fit the gutters and will soon be finished. Barbara had a year end function for the children and for the parents. I was not there but by all accounts was a huge success with about 60 people there to see their precious little ones.
Jacqui arrived from Cape Town for a Month’s visit. Little Emily is quite beautiful. She has adapted to the life in PE and appears to be at home with all these strangers. Hopefully she will soon accept us as well. Nicci and family arrived in PE to collect their car and will be leaving for Plett and then CT on Sunday 3rd December.
Here is my report on the Nippers Carnival that we had in Plett this month.
Nippers Plett Carnival 25 & 26 November 2006.
Under 10’s
The Build up
There had been a great deal of excitement and planning for this carnival. We had worked hard to train the Nippers at some of the more important and difficult of skills such as the Baton Hand over, The Malibu and the Body Board events as well as the team spirit. The coaches had tried to maintain some kind of record of the previous Carnival results as well as the results from the practice sessions. We met during the week to try to set out team for the four team events. It appeared that we would have sixteen u10 competitors if everyone was able to make it to the carnival. Everybody loves the Plett carnival. It is close enough for an easy drive and yet it is a mini holiday for us all.
Friday
On Friday afternoon Barbara, Ally and I took the afternoon off and drove through to Knysna where our son, Michael had recently moved. He showed us around the shop that he was managing and we had a look at the flat that he was renting. His family is still located in PE and will be moving there in a few weeks. It had not been a pleasant drive as the rain had fallen continuously and this made for tough driving conditions. There was a strong wind blowing and we were concerned for the conditions the next day.
My Mother, Ena lives in Plett and we stayed there for the night. Ena is 90 years old, struggles with eyesight and yet lives a full life on her own in a large flat in the main road of Plett. She tells me how she gets to Woolworths in the Market Square. She walks there and then when she has completed her shopping she stands at the traffic light and hitch hikes a lift up the hill. While she is doing her shopping she cannot really see what she is buying and the prices. But she tells us that everyone seems to know her and the local shopkeepers and staff are always most helpful in assisting her shopping trips. When she has to go any distance she seems to be offered lifts by her friends and so she makes a very good life for herself in Plett.
Saturday
On Saturday morning Ena made us a breakfast of Bacon & Eggs and we were early on our way to the beach. We found our tent and soon had ourselves installed for the morning. The coaches tried to do some kind of a roll call to see who was there and were delighted to find we had a full team of 16 u10 nippers. The day was due to start with a managers meeting at 11.00am sharp but somehow the time was blunted to some degree and we must have started something like a half hour late.
The Carnival
The first event for the day was the Taplin Relay. This is an event which encourages participation and binds teams together. The event has a run, swim, body board and malibu (long) board section. There are four to a team so everyone participates. We had four full teams and soon established ourselves as a force to be reckoned with, as our teams came first, third, fourth and tenth.
There was an Easterly wind blowing and while not strong, it was enough to make the surf quite rough and the Plett Central beach is known for the large beach breaks. These waves loom above the Nippers as they try to manouver their craft through the surf. Fortunately Anthony Cox “allows” us to assist this age group through the waves. Once they are through the breakers they are on their own and have to go around two buoys and then back to shore. Often their return trip is just as scary as they have these huge waves threaten to swamp them from behind.
The second event of the day was the Flags. This is an extemely tiring event as the nippers have to run up and down trying to retrieve the flag. The sand was hot and soft and hardly ideal conditions for a sprint. If a Nipper does not retreive a flag they are eliminated. If you think that being eliminated from the “Weakest Link” is tough, then just watch the dissapointment on the faces of these youngsters. And yet knowing that they have a huge probability of being eliminated they still persist and take part in the game. This takes guts and builds character.
The Coaches
One of the toughest tasks of the coach is to round up the Nippers for the next event. Understandably the Nipper must use the toilet, go for a cooling off swim, buy hamburgers, ice cream and other delectables and generally make themselves as difficult as possible to locate. Then having found them the coach has to persuade the Nipper that they should take part in the next event. There is often reluctance to participate where the event is tough and they are not likely to end up a top finisher. We hear that they are “saving their energy” for some future event. Or that they have asthma, sunburn, breathing problems etc etc. The coach must then explain that participation is everything and that often even a 20th position wins points for the team.
The coaches know that winning events requires numbers of participants. Merely having the top three does not guarantee a win in the event. We need as many participants as possible in the event to secure a win. Barbara was given the task of recording results for the u10s. She coped exceptionally well except for the Flags finals where she somehow missed the event and so we only recorded who was in the finals. We do know however that Lara won the girls event and that Tristan was placed third.
Another duty of coaches and of adults in general is that they must provide safety for the U10’s. This means that they must do a huge amount of swimming back and forth from the nippers going out through the surf to returning back with the breakers. In particular I saw Charles and Clint doing their fair share of the work. They must have been exhausted after two days of swimming.
Terry asked me how it was that I became a coach. Well if the truth be known; I am a self appointed coach with little or no experience as a lifesaver. But I love seeing both my own and other children having such incredible fun in a beach sport. Personally I enjoy being part of this group of people and am steadily getting to know which parents belong to which child as well as the names of the variety of people who I see each weekend. This weekend I was able to get to know Tristan’s mom, Tanya. I remembered that Terry’s wife is Caryn. I am now able to distinguish between Hannelie, Dianne and Charlene and know that they are married to Johnny, Chris and Craig respectively. I think that Clint finally knows my name and can now stop calling me “there”. As in: “Hello There”.
The Plett carnival is held at the same time as the Matric Plett Rave. As the Matrics of South Africa complete their exams at this time they think that they have now qualified to legally drink, smoke, Party, enter Miss Wet T-shirt competitions and that the word is at their feet. The coaches have to be vigilant as this bevy of beautiful bodies try to disrupt the carnival generally.
Courage
During the day we witnessed a number of feats of courage. Matthew H was about to start the Malibu event when he asked Hannes “Sir: what are we supposed to do with this board”. Then there was Maurice who, last year had hardly ventured into the surf past his waist and this year was taking part in every possible event. Natalie had a tough experience as she tried to get past the breaking waves but fortunately had Patrick there to assist her and she agreed that this was something that she would work on for the next carnival. Caitlin and Connor battled though the events but there was nothing that they was not keen and eager to complete.
Both Matthew W and Kim were wiped out on Malibus while trying to push through surf but persisted and finished strongly. This year Ally has improved in leaps and bounds as she was well placed in a number of events. Then there was a little girl from Mossel Bay. She had never had to go so deep into the sea. She was very scared of sharks. And yet when I swam around the buoys with her on the body board, she managed to complete the event and has set herself up for a further six years of Nippers participation.
It is wonderful for the coaches to see the way that the Nippers support their team mates. It is not all about me and my own results but just as much about cheering on and supporting the teams and club. The Nipper learns to accept defeat while striving to be part of a winning team. There was only one u10 Bluewater bay Nipper. This young chap continued to participate in the events on his own.
Should the Nipper take part in all the events of the day then they would have done seven tough events on the first day of this carnival. Taplin, Flags, Body Board Individual, Surf Swim, Beach Sprints, Malibu Relays and Body Board Relays. By the time that the last event had ben run it was about 17.00.
Saturday evening
Nippers and adults alike were all completely exhausted. On this particular afternoon the Springbok rugby team was playing in the third of a series of three games in the UK. We had lost to Ireland and then to England and today had the opportunity to redeem ourselves against the English. Barbara, Ally & I went up to Ena’s flat for tea and a shower.
We had booked for supper at the Moby Dick Restaurant at 6.00pm. By the time we got to the restaurant, the Springboks had beaten the English. Everyone seemed in a positive mood after our strong showing at Nippers as well as the good rugby results. At the Moby Dick restaurant they had a special set menu which we had. We sat with Charles, Ingrid, Hannes, Jacqui, Lynne and Alex. The adults ordered a few beverages to wash away some of the sun and sand of the day. This seemed to ease the way for some quite enthusiatic and animated discussions around a variety of unimportant subjects.
There was a little group of girls who seemed to have a ball as they discussed the days events and other important stuff. At another table there was a group of Nipper Boys. They looked like a mini street gang in the way that they related to each other. It was great to see them enjoying themselves so much. The waitress did a wonderful job with all these families and youngsters running around. We were all extemely tired and by 9.00pm headed off home to bed.
Sunday
On Sunday morning we were first at the beach and were soon setting up the tent and organising the boards which Plett had allowed us to store in their club house overnight. Again this morning the sharp time slot was a little blunted but by 9.00am the first event was under way. We started the morning with a long run. The under tens showed that we meant business at this carnival. The sun was hot overhead today. I think that a number of people must have been sunburnt.
There were six events for the under tens on Sunday. Long Run, Run-Swim-Run; Beach Relay finals; Malibu Board individual; Beach Sprint Finals and Flags Finals. If you were in an older group there was also the Iron/Diamond Nipper event where the individual has to swim, run, body board and then malibu board. We were pleased to see that there was a great deal of courage in the under 12’s in particular as some of them such as Ian and others had only recently joined Nippers and yet took part in this grueling event. Peter Wilson had been worried that there may not be sufficient activity to warrant the trip to Plett. I am certain that after a Carnival like this, there is no doubt that there is nothing but continuous activity from Start to Finish.
The u10’s had a bit of bad luck as one of our Body Board Relay teams was disqualified when we failed to touch hands at the change over point. However I was particularly proud of the beach relay teams when not one baton was dropped. Hannes noticed that we had not had a perfect change over as we had stood too far back for the relay change over.
Fortunately was had a brief photo session first thing that morning as the last event was the Flags finals. Those nippers who were not in the finals or who were eliminated packed up and left. If we are to keep interest high to the last then we need to have an event where everyone participates such as the long run as the very last event. By the time the Flags Finals was in progress we had managed to locate most of the craft and had secured the trailer so Barbara, Ally & I decided to call it a day. Our under tens had aquitted themselves above expectations. We had experienced courage, character and stamina that a sergeant major in the army would have enjoyed.
On our drive home Ally quickly passed out on the back seat while I drank a Red Bull to try to stay sharp. The drive was quick and uneventful as Barbara & I munched away at the sandwiches that Ena had prepared for us. As much as we love going to the Plett Carnival, just so much do we love getting home.
I have recorded the weekend as I saw it. If I have left out stuff that you think is important or if I have made mistakes in results etc, then just let me know please. I know that Wendy and others have a good photographic record of the weekend and look forward to seeing what they have to show us.
Below are the results. The under tens can be particularly proud of their performance. The u14s beat Plett by 50points, the u12s beat Plett by 7 Points and the u10’s beat Plett by 144 Points. At the same Carnival last year the U10’s were the only SS team that did not beat the Sardinia Bay team.

Hi All
Well done SSLC! Thanks to the effort that so many families made to get to Plett, we won thew carnival. In fact, for the first time in my time at nippers, we won all three age groups!!!! That is fantastic! We only managed to that thanks to the support of a large away team of 48 nippers. We saw some amazing performances, not only from our awesome top nippers, but also from the hardworking group of nippers!
Before I give the complete results, please take note of the next important point. We cannot have the end-of-year party on Thursday, as originally planned. There is a clash at the club. We therefore have to move the party to Friday, 01 Dec. All the other arrangements will remain i.e. 100 club, snacks, party packs and boerie rolls for nippers and so on. I apologise for the inconvenience, but hope you can all still join us to celebrate the season so far!
Herewith the complete results:

Hi Peter – thank you for documenting our thoughts on the Plett Nipper Carnival – A post mortem carried out immediately after the event while everyting is still fresh in our minds is always good.
I agree with all of the points made below and will get a forum together possibly with Sards and Blue Water Bay to discuss these points and agree on the implementation of them at our next Summies Carnival.
Plett and Ant Cox have already requested that our Summerstrand carnival runs over two days like the Plett carnival. We will need to think very carefully about the beach setup if we host our carnival at Pollok – we had the most successful carnival running at Pollok 2 years ago and had two arenas running together and things went like clockwork (we were also blessed with beautiful weather – which does help considerably with the water events)
We will talk on Thursday evening at our end of year function and put in an official letter to East Cape regarding our suggestions.
Thanks a million – have a great day.
Best regards
Don
From: Peter Giddy [mailto:pgiddy@hinet.co.za] Sent: 27 November 2006 06:03 AMTo: DONALD MCGILLIVRAYSubject: A FEW NIPPERS THOUGHTS 27.11.2006.
Morning Donald
Apologies for our sudden departure on Sunday but when the u10s had completed the final event it was as if a Tsunami of exhaustion hit our family.
Our Carnival 21 January 2007.
A couple of thoughts that we had:
Scorers
The official scorers should be given triplicate A4 books in which they write the events and results. Perhaps the result sheets should be signed by the scorer and one other before being handed into the administration office.
We should have a computer set up in the Clubhouse where we have the administration and where we can enter results into a Spreadsheet for immediate access to points totals.
We could then give provisional results at stages during the day.
We should give the beach scorers chairs and a TV table at which they sit.
Numbering
The Plett officials had squares with numbers 1 to 20 to hand to the children as they completed an event. I think that we should have a number of these sets but that the numbering should continue to 30 or 40. This would mean that the slower child is not shoved aside as a non finisher. They also have the dignity of being recorded and acknowledged as having taken part.
Starting on Saturday
For our own Carnival in January; I think that it would be great if we could start on the Saturday. We could offer the Plett and other away teams “home hosting”. Realistically if we are able to start on a Sunday at 08.00am and we must finish at 14.00pm the most events we can complete is about 8. If we are only able to have our carnival on Sunday then we should set out the schedule of events that allows for a limited number of events and not one which includes the list that Plett was able to fit into the two days. Even holding three or four events on Saturday afternoon would help.
Final Event:
As we discussed on Sunday; If the final event has limited numbers then we will see a dispersing of Nippers and Parents as we did on Sunday. We should try to make the last one or two events ones where all the Nippers have the opportunity to participate. The Long Run is probably the most suitable as it does not depend on the surf conditions.
Opening Event.
The Taplin was an excellent opening event as every child was able to take part and this set the tone for the carnival and helped build the teams.
Rope and tape
We will need rope and tape to mark out the exact start and finish lines and the Flags start and finish. It was not clear at Plett where the change over line was for the Beach Relay. Perhaps this was due to our having “borrowed” the rope from Plett. We should also have a few extra lengths for our own tent in case the weather is as good as it was for Plett.
Clearing the arena
We should have some Candy Tape. During an event such as the Taplin where there are a number of people going in and out of the water; we give a length to a Person standing in the water and lead it across to another person standing near to the start or finish. This would help in controlling traffic of passers by.
See you Thursday
Peter
27.11.2006.
Hi Peter
I am impressed with your report and how soon we received it!
We had a lovely week-end, and I was pleased to have met you.
The Nipper experience is an exceptional one. So many things stand out. The parents and competitors give amazing support not only to those who achieve, but also to the last competitor that crosses the finishing line. The hugs and words of encouragement from coaches, parents and fellow competitors. The obvious love for children, the patience and support the Nipper coaches have.
I am so pleased that we joined!
Regards
Tania

Don

Peter

Regards
Tania
