ADDO TRAIL RUN 12 MARCH 2011 KIRKWOOD TO ZUURBERG 50KAY

ADDO TRAIL RUN 12 MARCH 2011

This would be the second time that I take part in this event. Last year there was the Scheepers Family and Adrienne Wilson to keep me company. This year I entered but when I spoke to the runners from our group for a number of reasons they would not be taking part. And those who would take part were simply too fast for me.

One morning while doing our Friday Cycle, I spoke to Mike Dean and asked him if he would like to do this event. I described it as best as I could but no one can describe a mountain run -- you have to be there to understand. Mike entered the same day. Then I realised that Andrew Barton would be there as well. I had never run an event with Andrew and I know that he has the ability to go off with the faster group. So I was never 100% sure if he would stay with Mike and myself.

Tommy Satchwell spoke to me about doing the trail run. I told him a bit of what it is all about and he too entered. I know that Tommy is a lot stronger than I am and knew that he would not stay with our little group.

Sjani Human had been injured for some time but now was back on the road. I had not spoken to her about this event but she saw an old email of mine which I had sent to all the MPRG and was able to do a late entry. Her husband, Ray, agreed to come with us and to drive from the start at Kirkwood to the finish at Zuurberg.

A few days before the day of the event I received a phone call from PK De Villiers. He is a friend of Martin and Elmarie JV Rensburg. He would meet me on Saturday morning and drive out with us. His family would meet him at the finish.

In the days leading up to the event Nadia van Arndt continued to send out a variety of emails reminding us of all kinds of stuff. She is excellent in that regard as it tends to keep the interest and anticipation strong. Nadia and Estienne are the organisers of the event and they really do an excellent job of this.

Saturday morning finally arrived. I had my backpack all kitted up. 3lit water bladder; running top; tissues and little else. I took my waterproof sling bag which I had used last year. It is very convenient as it is on my front and easily accessible. I had my phone in the waterproof section and my cap slung over.

PK arrived early and we set off to meet up with Ray and Sjani. We left PE at just after 04.00am and had an easy drive past Uitenhage to Kirkwood. The drive took us just over an Hour and we were some of the first to arrive at the start. We registered and had a cup of coffee. Cliff Mac Kenzie and his two sons; Aiden and Bradley were there. They were going to be running with Robin Fourie. Dean Kivido who used to be a student of mine at University when I did some part time teaching and who I often see at events such as this one. Dean pas part of the support team last year and his photo shoot can be seen on the website. Chris Gedye (ex Achillean was also taking part this morning. Trevor Hawkins will be doing his third 50kay this morning.

There was a strong contingent of ladies from MPRG: Elmarie j v Rensburg, Claire Breedske; Michelle Elfick and Angie Fraser (Rob Elfick and Tim Fraser would meet us at the end while Martin and Darryl were not able to be there). Benita Barton was the only one of our group who had entered the 85kay event.

The morning started with a whole lot of Photographs and Interviews and a short briefing by Estienne. One of the runners said a Runners Prayer; And we were off. It was 6.00am and we had a long day ahead. Last year the event was in May and we had started the downhill in the dark. This morning it was light when we made our way down the dirt track to the main road into Kirkwood.

We saw PK, Tommy and friend Foggy and our 4 MPRG girls going off ahead of us. We jogged on at a steady pace. We did not want to start off too fast as we knew it would be a long day. Passing through the village there were a number of local inhabitants who greeted us. Cliff drove past with a wish for good fortune. Just before we reached the dirt road Cliff Mc Kenzie stopped on the side of the road and waved us past. And then we jogged into the part itself. It was a stunnig morning. Slightly overcast and cool. The first part takes us over some smaller hills and is really an easy run. We allow the 85kay participants to go off for their extra 15kay loop.

Trevor had pulled ahead. He was always in sight but just that little bit ahead of us. There is a strong pull up a sharp hill and then we arrive at the first of the refreshement stations. We load up. I eat as much as I am able as I know that I need as much energy as I can get.

The trail takes us into some deep forest areas where we cross streams all the time. Some of our group step gingerly accross the rocks and grass. I know from last year that there is absolutely no way that you can keep your shoes clean so I Sploosh through the streams and mud. We work our way trying to do a little jogging and lots of walking. The nature of the trail makes any sustained jogging quite difficult. I keep thinking of the runners who will do this event is half the time that we will take. They will jog and run up and down hills that we struggle to even maintain a decent walk.

We reach the second watering table. Again we stock up with as much as possible. Some of the runners hardly stop. I try to find a seat and take time to re-energise while eating potatos, sweets, jubjubs and chips. There is a group in a LandRover who have a flat tyre. Probably going a little too fast for these tough tracks and the tyres may have been too strongly inflated.

Shortly after the second Refreshment station we start the BIG climb. Cardiac! I am slighlt in front and slog it out to the top of the track. I turn a few times to look back at the vista. The valleys below looks just magnificent. Sjani is not far behind then comes Andrew with Mike. Trevor has taken it very slow at this stage. We meet up with Shaun Aupiais who is a mountain biker who decided to give this one a go. The furthest that he has run before is 21kay.

Once up the Cardiac Hill we can see the stretch of winding up hill ahead of us. On and on we walk with just an occasional jog inbetween. We reach the 3rd checkpoint which is not a refreshment table and carry on up. Finally we reach the top of the escarpment and here we regroup. A Croatian Lady comes up the hill just behind us. She is the first of the Ladies in the 85kay who are passing us. A number of Men have already passed us. Then comes Benita. She has now done around 40kays while we are at the half way mark for our run at around 25kays. She has a brief stop and then heads off. We stop for a food refil. It has started to become quite chilly up here. The mist is thick and we are drenched. Some of the group had changed socks. But really this is a futile excersize as the grass is so wet that your shoes and feet are soaking wet. I put on my cap, not for the sun but to keep the water off my face.

I phone Adrienne and Gerald. They can both relate to where we are and how we are feeling. One of the things that is completely different from last year is the mist that makes it impossible to see the views and sense of vastness of the Addo Park in this section. I have been using my Phone as a watch and it has taken us almost exactly 90minutes between refreshment stations. The two stations that are on top of the escarpment are tough sections. While there are not the hills and streams of the other sections, the distance seems forever. I suppose that it is the mist but also the sameness seems to take for ever. Finally we reach the next station. David and Rufka from the Dresden are there. Mike has some tea. I eat as much as I can.

And off we go again. I receive an SMS from Claudine van Zyl to say that Calvin and Jordan Zeelie are on the Fish River paddling. A surge of water has come down the river and the organisers have had to take some of the paddler out of the race. It is Jordan's first river event and Jacqui is quite worried. She is unable to contact Hannes. I tell the others about the SMS and it turns out that Sjani's daughter, Daniella is friends with Calvin. Later I recieve this SMS: "Thanks for the Prayers; God protected Jordan. He was heading straight for a huge tree when another paddler yelled :"Jump Out" which he did. He ended being swept down the river for 4kays but could have been sucked under had he hit the tree in his canoe. Believe our prayers of protection were for him. He recovered his damaged canoe and was last paddler home."

Back on the trail; Sjani was walking at a strong pace. The three men were battling to keep up with her. Trevor who had been behind us all along and only seeing him when we regrouped at the stations was now strong and moved on ahead. He announced that he had walked since Cardiac Hill. We started the descent. Muddy and wet tracks made the going very slippery. We had heard that Robin Fourie had retired. I am not sure if it was a fall or just not feeling well. The cold and wet could quite easily have affected some of the runners. We thought of Gerald who hates the cold. I was not at all affected by the cold and wet. As soon as we moved on I was quite warm enough.

Going down the hill to the farm lands I had a sugar drop and felt shaky and could not keep up with Mike and Andrew. A lady passed us and took a wrong turn. Mike took great delight is showing her through the gate. Once at the farm it is a short jog to the last refreshemnt station. There was a good group of people who had camped there. They put on a good spread and cheered the runners as they came in. Now it seems that many of the 85kay participants passed us. I was surprised by the number of ladies running on their own in these rough conditions.

Trevor pressed on and we would not see him again until the finish. Sjani remained ahead. I tried to keep up but was not strong enough. The last station had told us that there were 3kays of flat before the hill. Well those three kays of flat seemed to go on forever. Again we crossed streams the whole time. And again it was pointless in trying to stay dry. Our feet were saturated.

This is a very long section. In addition the clay, mud and uphill made walking very slow as we tried to not slide. Our shoes had no traction and were caked with mud. I tried to walk on the side of the path but this was only mildly successful. We were foot sore and weary. Up and up we plodded. Shaun passed us as we reached the final ascent. He and Sjani finished together. Finally Mike, Andrew and I crested the top of the Zuurberg Hill and were able to see the Inn ahead of us. I felt my calf starting to cramp and so decided to jog.

To my total surprise I see Gerald and Pat ahead. They have come to greet their friends who were completing the event. We now learned that Benita had become ill and had stopped at 50kay. Sad for her as she was hoping to do well in the 85kay but still a very good day's excersize. Gerald has just had an operation and is off running for 6weeks. Pat jogged in with us trying to take pictures of us finishing.

Reaching the end was huge. I know that we had not exactly done a stunning time. This final section had taken us around 2 hours while all the others had been around 90 minutes beteeen stations. We finished in 10.30hours while last year had been a 10 hour event. It was great to be greeted with a cold water and commemorative key ring. There was our faithful Evie and Darrel Raubenheimer who give so freely of their time to assist at all kinds of events from Triathlon to extreme marathons like this one. Angie Fraser, Claire Breedzke, Michelle Elfick (the three of them finished in 8.36) and their families gave us a huge welcome. I heard that Elmarie had done an amazing time of 7H14minutes.

I was totally exhausted. My feet were wet and sore. I had picked up a slither of glass when walking on the beach one morning and this was now really irritating me. I sat down and waited for Ray and Sjani and then finally was set off home. Tommy Satchwell and friend Foggy had done the event in about 2hours less than us and I heard that fellow Achillean Bradley MacKenzie had won the 50kay in 4.29 hours with his brother an hour behind him. Chris Gedye and Roger Vogel came in at around 6.39. Tommy Satchwell and Foggy (Gareth Calder) finished in 8.24.

The three of us: Andrew, Mike and I had done 10.07 while Sjani and Shaun had finished 3 minutes ahead of us and Trevor Hawkins was 7 minutes in front of our little group. I was surprised to hear that there were 6 people behind us. I had thought that we were last. As we drove down the pass to the main road we passed the 85kay runners. Some looking surprisingly well while others were shattered. They did not have far to go but still it would be a long way for them who were so tired.

That evening, in the shower, I realised how much mud I had accumulated. The water was brown. I did not have an easy sleep as my hips and joints were sore. Ally had been at a supper with her friends. Earlier on she had spent the day busy with EP Water Polo Trials. She told me that she had not felt good and had not played up to standard. Later the same morning she had two hours of Hockey Practice for those going to play in East London later this month. Julia had taken Jessica to Movies and a supper. This was a huge treat for Jessica who had gone in a new outfit and who really appreciates being treated.

This had been a long day for us. But worthwhile and while I cannot say I enjoyed the whole trip, overall this was a stunning event and worth doing. I am not sure if I will do it again. Lets see what happens next year. Often one tends to forget the tough and the mind only allows memory of the good times. Another highlight of the day was listening to Cricket: Earlier on we had heard that South Africa were floundering against a strong Indian team in the World Cup ODI series. However I sat in the kitchen later that evening listening to the final few overs and had the pleasure of the commentatorts telling us how Robin Petersen had hit Fours and Sixes to win the game for our team.

Here are the finishing photos:
See Tommy Satchwell looking all fresh after finishing 2 hours before us.
See Peter looking completely stuffed. The black on the face is the mud pack that he thought would make him look younger.
See Pat in the foreground taking photo's
Also at the finish were the Elfick Family from Grand Dad to Grand children.

BARBARA DIKKOP AND BABY PIGEON

March starts off with me going off to Aliwal North and Sterkspruit for a business trip. I take the GPS and the route that the machine sends me on is different to that which I have taken in the past. I would previously have driven to Grahamstown, Fort Beaufort, Queenstown and then taken the N6 to Aliwal. This time the machine takes me to Cradock

On my way home I stopped off at Middelburg where we planned to open a new shop the following week. It was fortunate that I had done so as the following day we had all kinds of problems. Computer connectivity being the biggest. I left late went via Cradock and had about 10 stop and go's makeing my arrival home on Friday evening at around 8pm.
Saturday morning was stunning. I was able to get out for the normal Beach Run and swim. Then Barbara and I got a lift to Addo with Roger Hewitt in his diesel Jeep. We spent the whole morning in a class room learing some of the most basic stuff regarding how to be an honorary Ranger. Then Pam, the leader took us to see the huts where the HR's would stay and then along the fence where she taught us to read the Eletricity charge in the wires of the fence. THis is a major part of the HR work load.
It was a long hard day. Ally had been at Water Polo Practice and then at Lene for the day. We collected her and then dropped her off at her friend in RIver Road for a party.
Sunday morning I had to do the Nippers List for Nationals before going to the beach. Ally and Barbara went to the Ocean Series but Ally pulled out of the swim. Jessica did the beach run.
Nippers today was stunning. We had a good turn out and I and new coach Mara, took the children out for a good paddle on the Malibus. Andrew gave them a hard workout doing IronNipper training.

Sunday evening I was in church for the last of the sessions on the Mission Of Christ. Monday morning Rowena and I left for Middelburg and spent the morning there. But when there was a thunder storm and the rain came into the shop we left for home and I arrived in time for Cell Group.

Tuesday evening Ally had the final set of Hockey trials before being selected for a hockey team to go to East London at the end of the month. We had supper with Lene, Jessica, Joshua and Daniel at Church. Pancake evening.

Wednesday: Ally has her mid-week Water Polo match. This is becoming a regular little outing for us. They do well this evening. Julia makes us a supper: Sustained energy cook book.

Thursday I go to King for the day and Barbara has trouble with the Dog Groomer who cust Bear's leg and has to take Bear to the vet. Friday I get ready for the event on

Saturday; This is the second Addo Trail 50kay that I will be doing. See separate Blog.

Sunday: Delene and family are getting Baptised at her husband's (Matthew) church. Nippers training. Drop of the letter to the Dog Groomer claiming the payment of the cost of the vet. Sunday evening church.

Monday morning off to Butterworth where we are opening a new Bradlows Branch. Tuesday in East London. Julia is off to the Pink Party in CT and has a new dress.

Thursday off to Middelburg for the day. A long day of 740kays there and back but better than staying overnight if I dont have to. On the way there I see an Aardvark dead on the road. It is a big animal with huge claws, a strong body and long tail. It has a pig like snout. Very sad to see it on the road side.

Friday: Uitenhage and office. Lene is organising a team for the walk for Cancer evening. It is at Kemsley park, Her office has a group there. Lene takes the children who enjoy them selves. I do about 90 minutes of walk / run and soon after 9pm Barbara and Ally come. Barbara and I do a few laps together before I leave for home. Barbara and Ally stay to the end. They park the bakkie next to Lene's tent and the children fall asleep in the bakkie. Finally they all pack up at around 3.30am. I was surprised how many people were there and what a big event it was. Each family or group had a Packet filled with sand and a candel. The candel was lit and placed around the field. For ourselves the number of people who we remembered who had had cancer seemed endless: Noelene Stedman; Ena Giddy; Allan Giddy; Ian Giddy; Michael Giddy; Barbara's Cousin Sue; Jacqui Nieberg (Wilmot); Debbie Dean; Roger Gush; Margie Saunders;

Saturday morning I enjoy the morning run at the beach followed with an ocean swim. This afternoon I finally collect the old Mercedes from Dean's house. Then I collect the bakkie from Lene's house. Dump the rubbish and take it home. Saturday evening Ally is out with friends. Here are a couple of pics of the old bakkie and the old Merc.

While I am at it here is a picture of Barbara's Opel Corsa Bakkie as well:

Sunday morning I am up early as I have agreed to assist with the marshalling at the Triathlon. It is SA Champs. Graham Richards is in charge of the Run section of the marshalling and route. The triathlon starts at 07.30; 13- 15Y; then 16 - 19y; then Open Age Groups and finally at 13.30 they start the Elite which is a real eye opener. Tim Don from the UK wins the Mens event.

In between I go to Nippers Training where we have the Hobie Beach Nippers taking part with us. The surf is big and scary for some of them. We do a swim, Body Board, Sprint Relays and Flags. And excellent morning of training. Ally is not feeling her best and leaves early. The Triathlon blocks off traffic and only a handful of Summies Nippers take part.

I do my marshalling with Brian Saunders. Margie is taking part in the Age Group Section. Others who I see down at the beach this morning: Pat and Ronel Scheepers; Heidi and Adrian Jansen; Chris Gedye; Trevor and Shereleen Vaughn - their two daughters are taking part; Alec Riddel and daughter taking part; Rob Ermes who is hoping to qualify to go to China; Adel and Anton V D Venter; Bradley Joubert; Darrel and Evie Raubenheimer as always helping at transition.

Monday is a public holiday and Barbara and I laze at home this morning. We should have gone to the beach for the Ocean Series but when Ally was not feeling well we decided to stay home. I bought a bolt cutter and cut the lock off the trailer spare wheel as I had lost the keys. Two sad happenings at work when a daughter of Berie (Greenacres) and a clerk (Cynthia) both died this weekend. Separate circumstances but both sad.

Tuesday I go off to Queenstown for the week. Back on Thursday evening. Ally goes to Hockey trials on Wednesday evening at Grey Astro. Thursday evening she goes to Grey with some friends for a show. Friday 25th there is a Nippers Cheese and Wine evening as part fundraiser for Nationals. Friday morning we visit Pearson to put Ally on standby for 2012.

Saturday 26th March Morning. I collect Adrienne and Rob Mitchley. We meet up with Andre, Pat, Ronel, Elmarie, Susan and Sjani. We have an awesome run on the beach front. A couple of us run the Admiralty route and end up with a swim. It was Rob's first run with us on the beach front and he thouroughly enjoyed it. Ally had Hockey practice and then later played some more hockey on the Clarendon Fields with some of her friends. Barbara and I look at some cars for sale. Then go to the funeral in Gelvandale of the daughter of Bernie Gysman (Russells Greenacres). Julia is into her Diving course and does a Pool Dive today. Barbara catches a Dikkop and a baby Pigeon.

It appears that the baby pigeon stayed on this branch for a few days and then "Flew off" to its mother. The Dikkop stayed for a couple of days making Dikkop noise throughout the night until one morning I heard the bird as I returned from a run and we never saw the bird again after that. It must have flow off to the golf course.

Sunday morning is our last Nippers Practice this season and the last official practice for Ally who moves out of the U14 category next season.

REDHOUSE RIVER MILE AND OFF ROAD TRIATHLON

FEBRUARY 2011

BARBARA BIRTHDAY
REDHOUSE RIVER MILE
SUNDAYS RIVER OFF ROAD TRIATHLON

PICTURES ALL FROM GERALD SCHEEPERS

Saturday I purchase some Slime-Green R50 and take out the mountain bike. I apply the slime green to the front and back tyres and give the bike a bit of a clean up. I make sure that the breaks are set so that there is no friction and pump the tyres. I take out the helmet, gloves, water bottle, pump and have everything ready for the Triathlon at Sundays River the next morning. I set out my swim and running stuff and feel ready for the morning. We are in bed early.

SUNDAY 27TH FEBRUARY 2011.
Today is Barbara's Birthday. It is not going to be a huge celebration for her as we have a jam packed action day. Ally is in the church music group, I am leaving early for Sundays River and we will be outdoors for most of the day. Michael leaves for Cape Town soon and just generally it is not a celebration for her.

Sunday Morning I am up early and load the bike, cooler box and some chairs into Barbara's Bakkie. Ally will be playing drums in the Church band this morning and Barbara will bring her to Sundays River a little later. Lene will also come with Jessica, Joshua and Daniel. I head down to Sundays River and off load my stuff. It takes two trips and then I forget my Goggles and have to rush back for them. I find Gerald and Pat with Ronel. Ronel is the person who inspired me to try this off road Triathlon as she did it last year. Rob Ermes, Nina Bodishe, Dave Emslie, Lyn Roche and Kerry Weeks (who ran with us at 6th Avenue many years ago) are also entered.

We rack up the bikes and walk to the start which is up stream just below where Jill and WIllie van der Marwitz used to have a house. We dive in and as usual have to wait for the start. The gun goes off and we head for the bridge. The water is shallow in places and it would have been possible to have walked some of the distance if you wanted to. We swim on, I look up and see that the front swimmers are already under the bridge while I have a long way to go. I settle into a steady (but slow) rythm. As I swim under the bridge I have this sense of doing something that I have never done before and feel good about it. Then we can see the area where Swimmers are already running up the bank while we have a fair distance to cover at this stage. We have to swim around a buoy and then up to the small white buoy before reaching the bank. As I exit the water I hear Gerald calling me to look at the camera.

We run into transition where I have this tiny little stool that I use for putting on my running shoes. I am not good at sitting on the grass. Helmet, Gloves and shoes on; Now I start on the cycle leg. Almost immediately I almost fall as we hit some really soft sand. Under the bridge, past the V. D Marwitz house and up a slope. Then the route takes us onto some road works where there is some kind of track. Then we cycle along the railway track where the thing I find fascinating is the number of empty wine caskets that we pass on the track.

I pass some cyclists and many pass me. I realise that I have the front shock on the FIxed Setting so it is not working as a shock at all. I adjust this and start to get the feel of the gears. The track is full of thorns, soft sand and stones. We pass many cyclists who are repairing punctures. I am VERY pleased that I applied the Slime Green. I will never do an off road cycle event without the Slime Green. I could see thorns and deviltjies stuck to my tyre and I am sure that I would have been sitting on the side fixing punctures in the dusty heat of the morning if it had not been for the slime green. And even having fixed a puncture it is likely in this sort of event that you will get a second puncture. I am greeted by a policewoman who knows my name. Probably a customer at Morkels. We cycled a circular route and then over the bridge back to Colchester. I passed Rob Ermes who was aready on his run. Then down to the grassy area next to the river and along here to the transition area. I hear Viv Bullock shout my name.

Gerald is there with his camera. I had heard some of the chaps moaning about no water on the run so I grab my water bottle and run out of transition. Stanford Slabbert is announcing and calls out my name. We run the same route as the cycle. Along the embankment, through the dusty scrub area and over the bridge to the village. I meet up with Laura from Jeffries who is doing her first Triathlon. We jog along the grass and back to the finish area. I am so pleased that I have done this event. My last, and only other off road tri, was a disaster with me getting two punctures and having to carry the bike back. Today was succesful and I finished all three legs.

I push the bike and my stuff to where I had left my chairs and cooler box and phone Barbara. She is on the bank right below me and I carry the stuff down to her. Jessica is swimming the Cross River swim and Ally is with her. Jessica does not appear very happy when she finishes. But she has done the swim. It seems that some spectators moaned at Ally thinking that she was competing.

Ally and I walk to the start of the Ladies Mile. It is a longish walk and a hot morning. I leave her at the start and start walking back. Patrick and Terry Billson are at the start watching their two girls Carmel and Lauren who will ultimately win todays event. Gerald is looking out for Ronel and Pat. I have to walk fast to keep up with the front group of swimmers. Ally is lying around 25th the whole way. I have all of her stuff and have to jog the last bit to where Barbara and Lene are sitting at the finish area.

I drop the stuff and make my way back to the Mens Mile start. I dont see Ally finish but later hear that she became disoriented towards the end of the swim and lost a few places. I am not at all concerned as I feel a huge sense of pride seeing her swim this distance at all. Ally ended up 29th overall in a time of 2123 minutes. Friends of Ally who are also "in the mix": Natalie Billson, Shimone Gordon, Tarryn Els, Christie Vaughn, Jessica Liss who was leading but who was overtaken at the end when losing her way. Ronel Scheepers 26 minutes and Pat Scheepers 40 minutes. Viv Bullock 27 minutes; Therese Boulle 28 minutes; Lexie Vaughn at 10 years old does 34 minutes; 215 Ladies finished the mile.

I make my way to the start. Ant Skinner, Mally Richardson, Kerry Weeks, Peter Marriot, Markus & MC Burri are some of the swimmers I see today.

We pass through the check in area. I have arrived Just in Time: Perfect; I wait less than a minute and we jump in the water. The usual wait as the marshalls try to force swimmers back to the start line. Then the hooter goes and we start this mad flurry of swimming. Legs and arms are everywhere. Even though I try to separate myself from the mass there is this bundel of swimmers that I cannot seem to avoid.

I am able to settle into a reasonable pace. I decide to swim crawl for as much as I can. And apart from short breaks to orientate myself I am able to maintain the pace. The only problem with this swim is that I have no idea where we are. Each time I look up I see the beautiful blue sky with the green bush that adorns the sand dunes on the other side of the river. The only break in the vista is where the sand dune is bare. I only breath to the left so it is blue sky and green bush, blue sky and green bush.

There are some buoys to guide us but I had not counted them while walking to the start so have no sense of distance at all. Blowing Bubbles into the river, breathing to the left and trying to maintain the pace is all that I think about. Finally I see what I think is likely to be the finish area. I swim past the Stormforce banner on the right. Now I know that we are almost there. The white buoy signals the final staight and I swim in.

Again I hear Standford Slabbert announcing my age and name. I have finished in just under 35 minutes. This is 10 minutes before the cut off time. Roger Fraser greets me. I make my way down to where Barbara and Ally are and we pack up and head off home. We have decided that we will not stay for prize giving and the lucky draws.

The three Jones boys; Wayne, Jason and Daniel do very well. Chad Ho wins the mens event. MC Burri does 18 minutes with Markus just behind in 20 minutes.Christian Fraser swims a 20 minute mile. I have swum a 34 minute mile and end up 251/310 swimmers.Kerry Weeks was just ahead of me. Rory McDonough and Juan Nel were a couple of minutes before me. Rob Ermes swam a respectable 28 minutes and was 17th in the age group. Ant Skinner and Mally Richards were just ahead of him while Jason beat his dad by two minutes. He announced this to me as I finished.

In the Off Road Triathlon I found the following results (out of 98 competitors):
Rob Ermes 27th 1:25
Ronel Scheepers 61st 1.34
Peter Giddy 82nd 1.51
Imran Moosagie (Nippers Dad) 86th 1.57
Lynn Roche 49th 1:29
Charlie Hills 59th 1:33 Him and Rory Hilton the only other >60's competing.
David Enslin 42nd 1:28 Ex Achillean.
